Statement in Solidarity with Hany Babu:   On 10th September, 2019, a team
of Pune Police raided the residence of scholar-activist Dr M.T. Hany Babu,
who teaches at the Department of English, Delhi University. They had no
search warrant and they claimed that he was a suspect in the Bhima
Koregaon case. His wife (also an academic teaching in Delhi University)
and daughter were not allowed to communicate with their neighbors and
friends and the women police even followed them to the washroom. The raid
went on for 6 hours, all of which time the police spent in going through
Hany Babu’s books. At the end, they confiscated 4 books, all freely
available in the public domain, and seized his laptop, hard disks and pen
drive. As Hany Babu himself put it, in the statement that he made after
the raid, the laptop and hard drives contain years of his research in
Linguistics, and student related files and assignments. He does not know
whether or when he will get them back.

Hany Babu, an OBC Muslim was one among the first group of people, to reap
the benefits of OBC reservations in central university, after the
implementation of the Mandal commission. He was one among the many newly
appointed Dalit and OBC faculty, who interrogated the Agrahara/Brahmanical
nature of Indian universities. He even earned a degree in LLB from the Law
Faculty in Delhi University towards this. In fact, Hany Babu is a highly
respected academic and has been struggling for years against
institutionalized caste discrimination and against the dilution of the
reservation policy within Indian universities.

When teachers like Hany Babu entered Delhi University, it was a practice
in Delhi University to convert OBC seats to General Category by giving
only 10% relaxation in admission criteria and not following the 27% quota.
In this scenario, he led the first OBC reservation case in DU as part of
the Delhi University Reservation Execution Committee (DUREC), which
eventually paved way for the ruling to ensure filling up of reservation
quotas. He was also an active in Academic Forum for Social Justice, an
independent teachers’ group that led many campaigns against caste
discrimination in the university.  He was also part of cases against
discrimination in SC/ST admissions as well as in the 200-point roster
system. Hany Babu was also the convenor of the Defence Committee for G.N.
Saibaba, his colleague.  He has also written widely on these issues and
has been campaigning actively for making the university a more democratic
space.

This move, we can very clearly see, is an attempt to target all those who
are working for Dalitbahujan issues within the University and to suppress
all dissenting voices. We, the undersigned, strongly condemn this state
atrocity against Dr Hany Babu and express solidarity with Dr Hany Babu in
his struggles for social justice.
