I am married to a girl from Mysore for 15 years now and I still can't speak Kannada, except for a few cuss words that various brothers-in-law taught me.
Same with French. In my salad days I ambitiously embarked on a mission to learn the international language of love. I managed to learn the words for 'yes', 'no', 'thank you' and numbers one to ten. To my consternation, it was insufficient to woo the winsome lasses in my class.
So anyone who can speak languages, especially those completely unrelated to their own, win my respect.

Narendra - what you may not know is that in the Madras Civil service of the 1800's, you had to pass a vernacular test in Tamil, Telugu & Malayalam to be apppointed as assitant collector.

sure sajna you can find the maslayalam versions ( i think 3 vols) at any DC or current boos store in Kerala. The English one is slightly difficult to find, I think Vedam books and some others carry it, u can get it on line.

Nice piece. Incidentally, Tukdi sayip is in fact 'sub collector' and not collector. Tukdi in Urdu/Persian meant a 'section' of the infantry. The head of the factory was referred to as the tukdi sayip as he was, in addition to being the head of commerce, also the head of the contingent of forces. Another explanation is that the word originated from Tipu's days when the head of his contingent was called 'tukdi sayip'. My brother who was the Sub Collector of Tellicherry in 1966-67 used to be referred to locally as 'Tukdi', although the sayip bit had by then been dropped.
