A couple of years ago John Hughes gave me 3 plaster walls to play with. I had never built a plaster structure or a diorama and at the same time the Internet-based Railroad Line Forums were doing a gas station challenge. There was no way I would finish in time so I decided to build the gas station for the 2008 NMRA British Region Convention which was a year away. Little did I know how large the project would end up!

Natural Disasters Activities: Students LOVE this Natural Disasters Research Project! Students research a Natural Disaster and then they decorate a shoe box based on what they learn! Students are responsible for decorating all sides of the box according to directions and putting a creative scene inside that represents that disaster.

Students may choose any type of Natural Disasters to research or you may also assign a specific one. Examples are: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Landslides, Droughts, Hurricanes, Tornados, Cyclones, Extreme Temperature (Heat & Cold), Wildfires, Tropical Storms, Floods, Wildfires, Blizzard

An architect and a sculptor make up this duo. Their work is inspired by classic disaster movies and post-apocalyptic literature. Their experimental scenes depict a dangerous world, ridden from human beings, all with a touch of humor. Their advice to young artists is to remember that all good projects require time for development.

This Japanese writer and photographer publishes his photographs of miniature characters interacting with food and mundane objects daily. He explains that, due to his office job demands, he could not go outdoors to take photos and started to photograph his little characters with what he had at hand.

Julieta is an Argentinian producer, art director, and sculptor specializing in models, miniatures, characters, and all types of objects. Her creations can be found in several animations and art, cinema, and advertising projects. She works with agencies, publishers, studios, and photographers. She teaches the Domestika course Techniques to Create Scale Models, in which you can learn to create a miniature world, from building the general structure to adding the smallest detail.

A London-based artist whose work consists of creating small scenes and characters left out in the street to be found by passers-by. He believes his art to be a mix of sculpture, installation work, photography, street art, and a reflection of the loneliness engulfing city life. He aims to instill empathy into the modern world.

Despite having an office job, this Japanese artist based in Okinawa dedicates time to photographing his miniatures using a tilt-shift technique. Among his favorite themes are nostalgia and our relationship with food. He took part in various collective shows and was nominated for the Japan Influencer Award in 2017.

Self-taught with a background in mechanical engineering, this artist's main passion is miniature worlds. Her art name, PicoWorm, comes from the word "pico," one of the small decimal metric units. She is drawn to realism as a source to evoke memories at the click of your finger, literally.

This Syrian-American artist and architect's work reflects the pain and consequences of political conflict in the Middle East. He uses objects left behind by those affected by the struggles to create miniature dioramas depicting war violence and devastation in the cities. He includes elements of sculpture and poetry in his artwork, as well as messages from his Islamic heritage.

It been 15 years since WenChuan great earthquake. Every Chinese people remember this great disaster, and also, remember lots of touching stories happened in those days. One was the next day after earthquake, PLAAF paratroopers were assmeble and flew by IL-76 to WenChuan. 15 paratroopers took risk jump out from IL-76 without any ground information or guidance. These fearless soldiers lucky land alive landed, some of them were wounded. They find out disaster area situation and remade communication with headquarters, guide more rescue to come. They gave the people hope, and help to save their lives, they were called "The 15 warriors of WenChuan" in China. The fact is, the PLA offices and soldiers always save the people, not just in earthquake, but also in flood disaster, in snow disaster and other disaster.(They are not like some oher military force, just sit above vehicle and just look at civilians in floods.)

The IL-76 transporter were also be remembered , they can carry so many people and goods to any place with high reliability. They also took as heros too! To memorize ours heros, I built this little scene: a group of Chinese paratroopers are landing a IL-76, they answer the call ready to fly to somewhere need them.

Public Relations Strategy increases knowledge in disaster management. The research method used is qualitative through a case study method. The strategy carried out by BNPB Public Relations is quite good through diorama learning media, in the form of audio-visual media that can help visitors get an explanation of natural disasters. In addition, it can help visualize natural disasters, such as documentaries or animation about disaster. The BNPB public relations officer explained about the diorama learning media. The size of the volcano disaster, landslides, forest fires and land, signs and other supporting dioramas. Visitors can also know the stages of disaster management starting from pre-disaster, during emergency response to post-disaster. In conclusion, BNPB Public Relations through diorama learning media has succeeded in increasing public knowledge about disaster management in Indonesia.

Though Grand Theft Auto V mods like Iron Man armour and makeovers get a lot of attention, what's most caught my eye lately is little dioramas with staged scenes. I've been wandering murder investigations, highway checkpoints, a Presidential rally, and even recordings of a ghost-hunting TV show. As a fan of little things, I'm pleasantly reminded of dollhouses, model villages, terrarium scenes, and especially Germany's massive Miniatur Wunderland.

The diorama designers pick spots in GTA V's world then plop down extra scenery, props, vehicles, and dressed NPCs to turn them into little scenes. Most focus on crime and disaster, as you might expect with GTA, but some do go weirder. Let's start with a drug bust by "Milchtropfen", who also made all the other scenes I'm looking at here.

I like the suggestion of crime that isn't just a fleeting three-star rating, where the police and FIB do more than chase perps until they hide down a train tunnel. This farm features briefly in GTA V's campaign (without the huge stash in the barn) during a short random event where Trevor murders everyone, then the world continues as if nothing happened. This scene treats a bust as a real crime to cordon off and investigate. I wouldn't want a GTA game to actually treat crimes this seriously but I love exploring a little scene set inside a world where the police do stop to take statements.

As someone who's dabbled in dollhousery and dioramas, I'm always fascinated by the scenes people freeze in time. I enjoyed poking around this paused bank robbery. Police are holding crowds back, news cameras are set up, a circle of cars surround the building with SWAT fellas holding tactical positions, and these hostages stand here forever, wobbling gently.

Barge into the scene, ignored by both sides, and you can ram your face against the glass doors to see money stacked up beside the open safe and several hostages down on their knees at gunpoint. I love getting up close with dollhouses and peering at them from different angles to find surprises as some sort of giant god, so this is a treat.

Or visit a fortified stadium speech by the President, which in some act of metasatire would sometimes load glitched out with most the crowd missing and half of the rest facing away as the scenery slowly collapsed.

In two later mods, visit the President's plane at the airport, then push past crowds of Secret Service agents at the hotel where he will enjoy a meal of a burger, shake, fruit, fizzy wine, and sweeties.

I enjoy the care and attention to detail. More than just human interactions, these are planned operations demanding infrastructure, taking into account what all of the little dolls present will need. You'll find enough vehicles for everyone, road cones carefully laid out for safety, portaloos, lights, generators, marquees, mobile offices, newspapers, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, coffins, burgers, bottles, bagels, bins, and barricades.

I do very much see these in the same way as dollhouses, building in a giant city of a house with a huge range of dolls and decorations. These aren't mods you can casually load up to passively enhance the world, to just add interest, as the hacky way they must be made means the game can only handle so many before it stumbles then crashes. They're not makeover mods. These are places to visit and peer at.

I enjoy the artificiality. People stand silent in looping animation cycles, gesturing, leaning, switching feet, but never going anywhere or doing anything. And they wonk out when GTA's dynamic elements get involved: freshly-spawned pedestrians strolling through tense standoffs; a driver pulling into a checkpoint to talk on her phone before getting back in and repeatedly ramming and reversing to get past a concrete barrier which is invisible in her understanding of the world; a cow knocking a physics object and making a crowd panic as the cops somehow blame me and open fire.

"It is an anxious, sometimes a dangerous thing to be a doll. Dolls cannot choose; they can only be chosen; they cannot 'do'; they can only be done by; children who do not understand this often do wrong things, and then the dolls are hurt and abused and lost; and when this happens dolls cannot speak, nor do anything except be hurt and abused and lost. If you have any dolls, you should remember that."
