Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria
Participants were randomly selected from the registry at senior citizen centers in two different cities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Eligibility included resident status of the selected counties, with erectile dysfunction for at least 3 months, aged 55-70, who are able to endure physical exercise based on physician approval. They must be able to commit to and attend yoga classes each week, have a valid drivers license and be English literate. They must be free of any prescribed drug that causes E , as almost all anti-hypertensive drugs have been implicated in erectile dysfunction (Fazio et al, 2004). Modifiable comorbidities are allowed, including pre-hypertension, atherosclerosis, obesity, smoking and diabetes. (Strikethrough's by SHZ - Justin et. al., I think we should not have the subjects have any other "diseases" -- overweight/obesity and smoking are more risk factors for diseases. Because we are not allowing for people to be on HTN meds in this study, I think it might be unethical to have them be fully hypertensive therefore I changed it to pre-HTN-- which is a strong risk factor for becoming HTN. If ya'll have a differing opinion on this I'm happy to listen. :-) ) These are the main causes of ED, and can be effected through lifestyle changes. Atherosclerosis accounts for 40% of ED in men over 50 (Fazio et al, 2004). Non Modifiable comorbidities implicated in ED are disincluded, ie- Heart disease, hormonal imbalance, neurological dysfunction, psycho-social factors, etc (Fazio et al, 2004) as they will not show a change from an exercise regime.
The minimum of three months of erectile dysfunction was chosen to avoid non-organic causes of ED (Fazio et al, 2004); The chosen age range was based on a study which showed that this age group is able to learn new tasks well (Brown et al, 2009).
The study was approved by the institutional review board at Touro University, California; all subjects provided written informed consent.
