Plot

The film begins with Catherine Tramell driving a sports car with a footballer named Kevin Franks. As they engage in risky sexual behavior, Catherine loses control of the car and crashes into the Thames River. She manages to escape from the sinking car, but does not attempt to save Kevin, who drowns.

Catherine is interrogated by Scotland Yard detective Roy Washburn, who suspects her of murdering Kevin. She claims that it was an accident and that she is innocent. She is released on bail and ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation by Dr. Michael Glass, a criminal psychologist and a former colleague of Washburn.

Michael is intrigued by Catherine's personality and agrees to take her as a patient. He diagnoses her as a risk addict, someone who is addicted to danger and thrill. He also begins to have sexual fantasies about her. Catherine, meanwhile, continues to write her novel, which features a fictionalized version of Michael as the protagonist.

As the film progresses, several people around Michael are killed or attacked in ways that resemble Catherine's novels. These include his ex-wife Denise, who is stabbed to death in an elevator; his colleague Milena Gardosh, who is poisoned with ketamine; and Washburn, who is shot by a sniper. Michael becomes the prime suspect in these crimes, as he has no alibi and his fingerprints are found on the murder weapons.

Michael confronts Catherine at her apartment and accuses her of framing him. She denies any involvement and seduces him. They have sex on her bed, which is covered with white sheets stained with blood. Catherine then reveals that she has recorded their conversation and that she has enough evidence to prove his guilt or innocence. She offers him a choice: either he can stay with her and live a life of risk and excitement, or he can leave and face the consequences of his actions.

The film ends with Michael looking at Catherine's manuscript, which has two different endings: one where he stays with her and one where he leaves. He then looks at Catherine, who smiles at him.

    Reception

The film received some positive reviews from critics who praised the film's cinematography, music, and Stone's performance. Roger Ebert gave the film three out of four stars, writing: "Basic Instinct 2 is not a great movie, but it is skillful and involving, and deserves better than being dismissed as trash."

Some critics also noted the film's camp value and cult potential. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote: "Basic Instinct 2 is so bad it's good. It's not just a guilty pleasure, it's a perverse joy."
