Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Below please find information about a screening in Atlanta of an amazing documentary film, "Soldiers of Conscience".  The Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta was privileged to find out about the film just before it made its world premiere last April at the Atlanta Film Festival.   The film considers the question of killing in war and if/when it is morally justified.  Done with the permission and cooperation of the U.S.Army, it presents a sensitive and balanced perspective on the question.  It's primary focus is on 4 U.S. soldiers who eventually decided not to kill any longer and describes how and why they finally came to that decision, including strands of Christian, Buddhist and humanist thinking that contributed to their decisions.

To be honest, when the assoc. producer said to me last spring, before I'd seen the film, "We think it's very balanced," my internal response was, "Yeah, but you're out in Berkeley and I'm here in the Bible belt."  But he was absolutely right.  I've sat with total pacifists and combat veterans both, who've each thought the film had significant themes to contribute to conversation about what is often a very difficult subject, for both soldiers AND civilians.  At bottom, the film helps all of us to look at the very human cost to those we ask to do killing on our behalf; not about the politics of it, the "rightness" of any particular war,  or etc., but rather, "What does it do to you when you take a life, and who can help you deal with the questions it raises?".  It is a powerful film about the power of the human conscience.

For the first time since the festival, there will be a public screening at Holy Trinity Parish in Decatur, on Sun. March 2 at 7:00 p.m.  See below for full information

Here is a letter sent to Decatur area churches, which includes the basic information:
