Dear Colleagues and Friends,
I'm writing to tell you about some upcoming events that I hope many of you will be able to attend and which I hope you will share with many in your various communities, congregations, universities and seminaries, networks, etc. Two therapists who are working on this event wrote the following letter to their own colleagues and I frankly couldn't say it any better myself, so (with their permission), am wholesale plagarizing here. Like they do, I believe that Ed Tick's approach to the question of how we help to heal our veterans is a question that does, indeed, entail "soul work" and that all of us, not just veterans, need to be entering together. I do hope very much that many of you can attend one or more of these events. For Episcopal colleagues who are receiving this, you will see on the fliers I've attached that Bishop Alexander has approved the Friday professional training day for 6 contact hours of clergy continuing ed. The event is very much intended for clergy/religious leaders of ALL faiths and I hope you will share with interfaith colleagues, as well as others you know in healing professions of other sorts.
Please note that their comments are focused on the Friday training day only, not on the Saturday events which are free and are intended for a much wider audience. The morning piece is intended for the public -- anyone who cares about vets -- and the afternoon piece (a closed session, not open to the public) is intended especially for vets (of ALL conflicts, not just the current ones) and their loved ones. The attached brochures explains further.
Here's what they say:
"If we
are to return war to its proper place as a last defense when absolutely
necessary, we must heal the wounds of our soldiers and communities. We
cannot achieve peace-making without first achieving true and
comprehensive war-healing," states Edward Tick, author of War and the Soul- Healing our Nation's Veterans from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
We are personally excited to tell you about an upcoming workshop
on September 12th with Dr. Tick for clinicians, healing professionals,
and clergy.
Veterans Heart Georgia, a recently formed grassroots group of veterans
and their families, psychotherapists and clergy are sponsoring this
workshop in partnership with the Society for the Integration of
Spirituality and Psychotherapy. We would love for you to join us.
The professional workshop will be one part of two days of events for
professionals, veterans and their families and the larger community
introducing Dr. Tick's work with Post Traumatic Stress as a "Soul
Wound". His focus on the psycho-spiritual aspects of healing and the
process in which the entire community can participate in the holding
and healing and the return of our veterans is unique. This
work challenges our societal norm of distance and separation from war,
soldiers, and their families.
The reach of war extends into our therapy practices and our
congregations at a personal, professional, communal and global level.
No one escapes the effects of war. Every generation, since the
founding of this country, has experienced war. Our ancestor's traumas
live in us. The effect of war is the "elephant under the rug"... we
don't talk about it, sometimes we trip over it.
We are inviting you, dear colleagues and friends, to find a greater
understanding of how to effectively help heal the fabric of our lives.
As we look into the future of our work we can predict an increase of
individuals touched by wars coming into our offices and congregations.
It is incumbent upon us to consciously work towards the successful
return and reintegration of our nation's veterans.
