The process for setting up an Ergonomics Program as outlined by the OSHA Ergonomics Program Standard (repealed) is covered, as well as how to provide Prevention and Reeducation Programs to employees, employers, and clients that reduce the risks and costs associated with musculoskeletal disorders. Additional topics include upper and lower extremity disorders (including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome); back and neck injuries; and performing a worksite ergonomics analysis. Identifying risk areas and providing cost-effective solutions, exercises for prevention, techniques for effective training, body mechanics (including the revised NIOSH Lifting Formula), and posture are also covered. (For example, maybe you've never worked in a software company before, but they're hiring for customer service and they see you've been doing phone-based customer service for two years in a different industry. That's super relevant/valuable).

But going back for a Master's right after completing your Bachelor's degree is the worst solution to your problem, because it doesn't get you any of what they REALLY want, which is qualifications and experience doing work that's similar to their job.

You can try to find an internship or volunteer for a month or two to get some real experience on your resume (yes, volunteer or unpaid work is still experience. Working for yourself or freelancing is as well. Experience is experience).

About a year ago, I was introduced to a friend of a friend at a fashion industry event. She was a knitwear designer just like me. We got to chatting, and she proceeded to tell me a little bit about her background and how she pursued fashion later in life. She graduated college with an accounting degree and started working in that field. A few years later, she decided to go back to school for fashion design.

On the plus side, working in the fashion industry can be really cool, but it doesn't mean that you have to be a designer. There are lots of career options within the fashion industry. My advice is if you are interested in being a designer, or if fashion has always been your hobby, first stick with a career that you already have and try to get a job within the fashion industry. For example, if you're an accountant try to get a job as an accountant within a fashion house. Or if you're a lawyer try to bring on more fashion industry clients. Here in New York City there are lawyers and firms that specialize in fashion industry cases. How cool is that?

ASD is staggering the first day of school in August 2024 to support students in a new school environment - sixth-graders in middle school and ninth-graders in the Freshman Academy. All neighborhood and comprehensive schools will follow the staggered first day schedule. Classes will begin at the new school start times, which is 9:30 a.m. for middle school and 8:45 a.m. for high school.

Due to the staggered start date where all school staff will be on hand to support students, middle and high schools will not hold optional orientations or camps for students prior to the first day of school.

School zones can be a chaotic place with children possibly dashing in and out of traffic, and unfortunately, crashes can and do happen. In 2022, there were 746 traffic crashes in Texas school zones, resulting in 23 serious injuries. The most common causes were driver inattention, speeding, and failure to yield the right of way.

The ergo break for the larger muscles of the lower body need some extra stretching. The low back and lower extremities generally work in relatively shorter ranges of motion if work tasks are done correctly. e.g. lifting with your legs and not just bending down from the waist to pick up a box; lifting a box from shoulder level and lowering it down to a raised pallet or vis-a-versa.

Side note: I worked my way through high school and college in the grocery business doing pretty much every job that needed to be done. Everything from cleaning parking lots and bathrooms to moving freight, closing the store and closing out the registers. The most common factors in all the jobs were: 1) I worked crazy long hours and I was on my feet most of the time. 2) Since break time only came every two or three hours, I could not wait to sit and put my feet up.

You have 209 bones. Where two bones meet is called a Joint. There are over 600 muscles crossing these joints. They do work by ONLY PULLING or shortening, they never push. When muscles are static and tight, they have REDUCED circulation causing fatigue and will get a little stiff. This MAY cause damage to the muscle tissue itself from reduced circulation and strain to the tight muscles. Therefore, we NEED to relax the tissue and increase circulation. That is accomplished by changing positions plus rest. This is where Ergo Breaks come in.

In the Office Work environment exercise newsletter, I stressed the importance of balancing the trunk to a neutral position and posture. The sitting worker tends to lean forwards towards their Keyboard and VDT/Monitor. Thus, losing the back support of the chair and fatiguing the back muscles that are static. While at the same time, the shoulders and neck muscles are tightening. In that type of work environment standing to stretch is mandatory!

However, in the standing work environment, you will often find the need to lean forwards to pickup/ handle items or do tasks. Much of the time your head is bent forwards and down. In addition, you may be reaching and twisting out to the sides, bending to the floor and then moving back up to above shoulder.
