Hello all, and apologies for any crossposting.

Does anyone have experience successfully importing mbox files to ePADD that they've gotten from the Apple Mail client?

I'm trying to do this now and realizing that the mbox files are actual folders full of emlx files, which are all importing separately to ePADD instead of the mbox folder structure.

The donor I'm working with has a robust folder system in her Apple Mail client that I want to retain as separate folders in ePADD, and I thought this would be possible because each of those email folders has an associated mbox file (which is actually a folder, full of emlx and other files, I didn't know this was possible?).

If someone has ideas please let me know, and I can provide some more info, screenshots of the issue, etc. I appreciate it!

Thanks,
Alix

Hi Alix,

I actually had a similar encounter with emlx files a few months ago - a donor had exported 4 folders (e.g. folder1.mbox with a bunch of emlx files inside) from his email account and had included them alongside some other files on a drive. This was my first encounter with emlx files. I ended using this script: https://github.com/imdatceleste/elmx2mbox that was mentioned on the LOC format description page.

I've wrote up my troubleshooting steps here: https://github.com/emsommers/archival-work/blob/main/emlx-files.md

The script was able to convert each folder of emlx files into its own mbox file, that I then imported into ePadd. I was working on a computer running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS but I think this would work on a Mac too.

All the best,
Emily

Hi Alix,

When you say you have mbox files, which are actually folders with emlx files, do you mean something like this:

Thanks
