Hi ePADD users! I'm fairly new to ePADD and having trouble changing the epadd.base.dir in the epadd.properties file. I started working in ePADD on a Mac, but want to work on a different computer (which happens to be Windows). So I moved my epadd-settings and epadd-appraisal directories to an external hard drive. After I edited the base directory path to point to that HD on the Windows computer, I got an error when I opened ePADD. I've tried formatting the path in different ways (e.g. using forward and backslashes).

I guess I'm not sure if what I'm doing (moving working ePADD directories mid-appraisal) is possible. Any tips will be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Hi Shelly,

ePADD was originally intended to be used on a single computer during the appraisal process, but it is possible to switch between workstations as long as you edit the properties file to match the location of the epadd-appraisal folder. I think you generally doing this correctly, but there are a few things to check to make sure.

You will want to check that you have uncommented the line that includes the base directory path in the epadd.properties file by removing the “#” that precedes the path. You will also want to make sure that you have changed the path to reflect that the files are stored on an external hard drive rather that the default, which is your local hard drive. So the default path (on Windows) would be something like:

#epadd.base.dir=C:\Users\sblack\

And if you move the folder to an external hard drive and uncomment the line it would be something like:

epadd.base.dir=D:\myExternalDrive\

If you are switching between operating systems, you will also want to check that you are running the appropriate ePADD program file for the operating system — epadd.exe for Windows or epadd.dmg for Mac. Alternatively you could run the epadd-standalone.jar file from the command line on either operating system. There is more information about running the .jar file in the ePADD user guide in section 2.2.1.

I hope this helps! Please write back if you are still getting an error after giving this a try.

Best,

Thank you, Roxi and Sally, for the assistance.

I did some testing between the Mac and Windows computers using a smaller test MBOX. (The real one I'm working with is 40 GB.) The good news is that I could start an ePADD session, move the files to an external hard drive, edit epadd.base.dir and epadd.settings.dir to point to the drive, and open the ePADD session on the other computer. (I tried it from Mac to Windows and vice versa.)

However, when I move the 40 GB MBOX session from the internal Mac drive to the external drive, I cannot view it on either Mac or Windows. Sally, should I directly email you my error logs?

Thanks again,
Shelly
