Indian workers
were already under seige from the COVID-19 pandemic and
economic collapse before their own government took up laws
against them. Quoting the motto "never waste a good crisis,"
Prime Minister Narendra Modi seized the opportunity to push
through a series of laws that dramatically increase
corporations' power and further disenfranchises already
vulnerable laborers. In a nation where 60% of the population
is employed in agriculture for their main source of income,
one of these laws gives corporations the right to set
agricultural prices and undercut already impoverished farmers.
Another curtails citizens' ability to sue
corporations and restricts courts' jurisdiction to oversee
such lawsuits.
Since the pandemic began,
India's staggering levels of inequality have skyrocketed.
Unemployment has risen to 27% — an unfathomable rate. Suicide
among farmers has increased. As many as 76% of Indians in
rural areas cannot afford to buy nutritious foods for their
families. Yet the billionaires owning India's biggest
corporations have increased their massive wealth by 35%.
Amazingly, workers are banding together to protest
this cruelty, and have created the largest workers' strike in
the history of the entire world. Farmers, bank
tellers, transporation workers, artists, athletes, and more
are coming together for a strike that's 250 million people
strong. We need to show our support. Sign the petition to demand that Modi and his
government repeal their egregious anti-worker
laws!
Thank you for all that you do,

P.S. By
attacking agricultural workers, Modi's government is attacking
the vast majority of its people. Demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and
members of Parliament reverse their chilling corporate
empowerment laws now. |
