UK agrees to deal with US that will deliver NHS billions to pharmaceutical industry

Hello and welcome to Ekō News.

NHS = money for the US

The US pharmaceutical industry is scoring a major win over the UK, thanks to Donald Trump.

A new deal that would reduce tariffs to zero includes a provision for the NHS to buy US-manufactured drugs at a 25% markup by 2035. That could cost UK taxpayers an extra £3 billion annually.

The deal was criticized in Britain, with Liberal Democrats health spokesperson Helen Morgan labeling it “a shakedown” that would have ramifications on the country’s economy and preparedness.

“Trump demanded these pay rises to put Americans first and our government rolled over,” Morgan said. “Patients stuck on crammed hospital corridors or unable to get an ambulance won’t forget it.”

US officials, on the other hand, praised the deal. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., said it “strengthens the global environment for innovative medicines and brings long-overdue balance to US–UK pharmaceutical trade.”

It’s certainly strengthening the US pharmaceutical industry.

“It is not yet clear how it will be paid for. There is absolutely no slack in current published NHS spending plans for this major commitment and that is a real worry from trust leaders.”—Daniel Elkeles, NHS Providers CEO

Redefinition for profit

When you’re in the business of war crimes, you want them not to be crimes at all.

That’s what Palantir CEO Alex Karp said this week at the New York Times’ DealBook Summit about US strikes on boats in the Caribbean.

“The more constitutional you want to make it, the more precise you want to make it, the more you’re going to need my product,” Karp said.

Palantir has a number of lucrative contracts with the US government—and for years was solely dependent on taxpayer dollars for revenue.

Aiming at Microsoft

An Irish human rights group is asking that Microsoft be investigated over its role in facilitating the Israeli slaughter of civilians in Gaza.

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) filed the request with the EU’s Data Protection Commission, claiming that Microsoft’s data analysis on behalf of the IDF was contrary to international law.

It’s the latest sign of tension between the two countries. Relations have deteriorated over Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

“Microsoft’s technology has put millions of Palestinians in danger. These are not abstract data-protection failures—they are violations that have enabled real-world violence.”—Joe O’Brien, ICCL executive director

Here’s your campaign of the day

Shocking new court filings show Meta allowed strangers to message minors, refused to remove harmful content, and let 17 offenses by sex traffickers happen before suspending their accounts. Executives were warned, yet they looked away.

This can be a turning point if we act now. Mark Zuckerberg won’t step down on his own—but we’ve seen before how public outrage creates real consequences: CEOs lose influence, credibility, and partnerships. We can turn this public reckoning into a global outcry Meta can’t ignore.

Mark, it's time to go
