The number of coronavirus cases detected so far outside of China could indicate the disease is more widespread than initially believed, and countries should prepare for the possibility that infection rates will speed up, says World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. A team of WHO experts has arrived in China to assist in containing and treating the coronavirus, which has infected more than 40,000 people worldwide.

United Nations
A revised version of a United Nations Security Council resolution proposed by Palestine has dropped accusations that a peace plan for the Middle East prepared by the US violates international law, instead asserting that it departs from parameters set out in previous UN resolutions. The council is expected to vote on the resolution on Tuesday.

Progress is being made against the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where a growing number of people are realizing the gravity of the situation, which allows medical workers to identify and treat cases of the disease earlier, says World Health Organization regional director for Africa Matshidiso Moeti. "We are cautiously optimistic that we are reaching the end of this Ebola outbreak," Moeti says, while cautioning that insecurity in the region could still hamper efforts.

Less than one-third of the world's researchers are women, and women who pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics still struggle to obtain the same recognition, success and financial compensation as their male counterparts, says UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. Global leaders must renew their commitment to closing the gender gap in scientific fields as the world prepares to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science this week, says International Seabed Authority Secretary-General Michael Lodge.

Temperatures at the Esperanza research base in Antarctica reached a reported 64.94 degrees Fahrenheit last week, the World Meteorological Organization has reported. A WMO committee is working to verify whether the report constitutes a new record for the continent.

Peacekeeping and Security
The United Nations will host a second round of talks between representatives of the Libyan Government of National Accord and the Libyan National Army later this month in Geneva, Switzerland, after the first round of talks ended without a lasting cease-fire agreement. UN Special Envoy for Libya Ghassan Salame, who served as a mediator in the first round of discussions, has thanked both sides for their "high professional and positive spirit."
