The climate crisis is an oceans crisis. We need to protect our oceans properly to truly fight climate change. Tell the EU to save our oceans now!

Oceans, which cover 70% of the world, are crucial to our survival - they produce much of the oxygen we breathe and absorb excess carbon dioxide - protecting them is a major way to combat the climate emergency. But right now we're pushing them to the edge of collapse.

Overfishing is putting major stress on our oceans - almost 90% of fish stocks in the Mediterranean, and over 40% of fish stocks in the North-East Atlantic are overfished. [4] Without urgent intervention overfishing will irreparably destroy marine ecosystems, and diminish their ability to be carbon sinks  - a vital process in minimising climate breakdown. [5]

The climate crisis is an oceans crisis. Let's use the momentum created this last week, when millions of teenagers and adults joined in protest all over Europe for the Global Climate Strike, to bring attention to our desperate oceans.

Tell the EU to save our oceans

This week the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a special report that shows how awful the impacts of climate change will be on the ocean - and as a result, for us. An ocean full of life will play a central role in solving the climate crisis. But the ocean will help us only if we stop overfishing immediately and ensure that at least 30% of the ocean is fully and properly protected.[3]

The EU agrees there is an oceans crisis and has made a plan to end overfishing by 2020. But after five years, they are blatantly ignoring their own promises (and the science), while our marine ecosystems continue to be destroyed. Why? Because fisheries ministers pander to the short term interests of big industry and lack the political courage to take action for sustainable fisheries.

With the release of the new IPCC report and the renewed pressure on the EU to take bold action on climate change, let’s turn up the pressure even further show support to save and protect our oceans.

Tell the EU to save our oceans

The 2020 deadline to end overfishing and to save our seas is fast approaching. Join more than 200,000 WeMove Europe members who have already signed to demand that EU ministers keep their promises.

In solidarity,

Giulio (Rome - Tyrrhenian sea), Jörg (Lübeck - Baltic Sea), Alexandre (Marseille - Mediterranean sea) and the whole WeMove Europe team
