CENN is Announcing a Competition for the Conservation of
One of the Rarest
Bird Species in Europe – the Imperial
Eagle
.CENN is announcing a competition for the conservation of one
of the rarest
bird species in Europe – the Imperial Eagle (Aquila
heliacal)!
Purpose of the Competition: To raise awareness in
society concerning the
importance of protecting and conserving rare species
such as the Imperial
Eagle.
Content of the Competition: The
Imperial Eagle inhabits the lowlands of
Eastern Georgia. The bird is
classified as “vulnerable” on the International
Union for Conservation of
Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. The
population of Imperial
Eagles is steadily declining. Currently, the number
of nesting Imperial
Eagles is 10 pairs (male and female), as opposed to 55
pairs 20-25 years
ago.
Population decline can be explained by: human disturbances,
cutting down
nesting trees and electricity poles, removing eggs and eaglets
from the
nests, death by electric current, weather factors (e.g., wind or
snow
destroying the nest), and habitat and food
degradation.
Imperial Eagles lay 2-3 eggs and raise 1-2 offspring
every season. Every
missed year of nesting adversely affects the population
size and further
endangers the Imperial Eagle bird
species.
Who Can Participate: School students from the Kakheti
region can participate
in the competition, individually or in
groups.
Terms of the Competition: Participants should prepare a
thematic project
proposal for the competition.
Select
Criteria: Precedence will be given to detailed, innovative and
sustainable
activities.
Prize: CENN will award a grant of 2000 GEL (maximum)
to each of the 9
winners of the competition.
Deadline: March
30, 2018
