thanks Heike. I'm also CCing Eugene in case he's able to attend. our Brazil director has been out so we've been unable to consult him, but for what it's worth here's some text for the intro of an op-ed that we've tried to get placed, though it's looking pretty unlikely now.

"A press release issued on October 31 read, at first, like a Halloween joke: “Itaipu is a UN Climate Change Partner at the COP23 Climate Conference.”

For those who don’t know it, the Latin American firm was behind Itaipu Dam, one of the largest megadams in Latin America. The firm was playing on the debunked notion that hydropower is green energy and could be used to replace fossil fuels. In fact, research has shown that tropical dams are some of the world’s most egregious emitters of methane, a greenhouse gas many times more powerful than carbon dioxide.

Despite its supposed “green” credentials, Itaipu Dam submerged some of the world’s most magnificent waterfalls. (The company later dynamited them, precluding the possibility of restoration.) And the project displaced upwards of 10,000 families – approximately 59,000 people – when it was built. Hydropower projects, with their attendant roads and transmission lines, are also known drives of deforestation.

And yet the dam industry still claims hydropower can build climate resilience, and harmlessly wean us from fossil fuels. But as events in the past 12 months have shown, nothing could be further from the truth."

it then goes into the recent near-disasters in Oroville, Houston and Puerto Rico where dams have nearly failed under climate-induced storms and record rainfall, etc.

not sure that's especially helpful, but even if we don't have the details of Itaipu as relates to climate change, I think it's fair game to raise some of the points from the "10 reasons" flyer at the session.

wish I could join you all on Saturday

best,
Josh

Hi Josh,

Have you been able to find some short info on Itaipú in case a colleague (Anna, in cc) manages to go there?

Sorry that I didn't get back to you before. Attached is our flyer in case I didn't yet send it (I stole the 10 reasons from your website - thanks for drafting them back then!). My colleague Thilo has raised criticism from the floor at an event IHA organized on Monday, and had a lengthy talk with Richard Taylor afterwards. Besides he has been at other events as well, but hasn't found time to communicate much as he also had individual meetings with our Development Ministry, a public event with our guest from Peru etc. Hopefully some people will go to the manifestation on Saturday with our old banner on "Wrong climate for damming rivers" (it is quite heavy though, so I don't know, whether they will actually carry it). More to follow when Thilo is back.

Best, Heike

thanks Heike, really appreciate your insights. I'm checking with our team to see whether there's a good hook around Itaipu, even if that means mostly over social media, etc.

could you tell me a bit more or send any materials you might have on your plans around dams at the COP? we'd be happy to try to amplify your efforts

Best,

Josh
