Canadian company First Quantum Minerals Perú is threatening
to rip open the precious rainforest for mining, polluting
vital water sources and killing wildlife like the
vulnerable black spider monkey.
But the Indigenous peoples of the Shawi Nation have a watertight
plan to beat this bully in court. We can help them
win – then supercharge their alliance’s efforts to protect a
massive 86 MILLION acres of Amazon rainforest!
They just need to prove the land belongs to the Shawi
Nation and demonstrate they weren’t consulted about these

Known as the Earth’s lungs, the Amazon rainforest is a crucial
carbon sink and rain machine, teeming with thousands of species
vital to all life on Earth. After Brazil, Peru is home to the
second-largest area of the Amazon – but it’s fast disappearing.
Millions of acres have been destroyed by mining and logging
companies.
Now, the Shawi Nation, which holds 200 Indigenous
communities, is facing an existential threat. The Peruvian
government has granted 11 mining concessions to First Quantum on
Indigenous lands WITHOUT consulting local communities.
Locals are living in fear of an open-pit mine at the headwaters
of the stunning Cachiyacu River poisoning their drinking water and
destroying their way of life.
It’s totally wrong and communities are fighting hard
against this toxic mining giant to prove it. With the Ekō
community behind them they could supercharge their efforts,
immediately hiring lawyers to block exploitation of their
land before it begins – and kick First Quantum out
forever.
The company is already scrambling after it was forced to
drop its mining projects in Panama following a huge
backlash from locals. So we know the Shawi Nation has a
real chance of winning this!
