One Big
Thing: Who are the #RealLifeHeros in
your life? | |
What is
it?
- Today
is World
Humanitarian Day, an official United Nations
day to honor and recognized all humanitarians
around the world who are risking their lives on
the front lines every day.
- Last
year was the most violent year on record for
humanitarians, with 483 attacked, 125 killed,
234 wounded and 124 kidnapped. This represents
almost a 20 percent increase from the 2018
figures.
Why is it
important?
- The
first World Humanitarian Day was celebrated in
2009. Since then, nearly 5,000 humanitarians
have been killed, injured or disappeared. We
condemn these attacks, and call for
accountability for perpetrators and justice for
survivors.
- Since
the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need
for humanitarian workers is greater than ever.
People from across the globe have answered the
call to serve a cause greater than themselves.
What can you do?
- Check
out #RealLifeHeros on Twitter, Instagram and
other social media platforms to learn about some
of the unsung humanitarian heroes around the
world.
