Ongoing and fresh conflicts in
many regions have hampered efforts against the
pandemic, advises United Nations
Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs
and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock as
UNICEF says the world will only be safe from
COVID-19 when everyone, including those in
hard-to-reach or developing regions, is
vaccinated. Delegates at this week's World
Health Assembly have agreed to hold a session on
global pandemic preparedness in November, while
a World Health Organization insider says the
agency has identified areas of its virus probe

The World Health Organization is
moving too slowly to address allegations that
members of its staff sexually abused and
exploited women in the Democratic Republic of
Congo while responding to an Ebola outbreak in
the country, the Independent Oversight and
Advisory Committee for WHO Health Emergencies
Programme says. "[W]e urge WHO to immediately
implement preventive and responsive measures in
areas that are potentially high risk for sexual
exploitation and abuse," says committee chair
Dr. Felicity Harvey. Full Story: Devex (free registration)

The extraction of the world's
mineral resources offers great opportunity, but
is often also associated with corruption,
population displacement, biodiversity loss,
environmental degradation and human rights
abuses, says United Nations Secretary-General
Antonio Guterres, noting the industry must
improve to facilitate sustainable global
recovery from the ongoing pandemic. Companies
must improve transparency into environmental
pledges and the way they measure progress on
climate goals, says UN Global Compact Executive
Director Sanda Ojiambo. Full Story: Xinhua News Agency
