Dear subscribers,

The green agenda is becoming more politically visible, but ecosystems remain under threat. Across the region, momentum is growing: Ukraine became the first country in Europe to adopt a national standard for eco-industrial parks; Armenia officially pledged to reach climate neutrality by 2050; Moldova presented an ambitious green transition plan; and Azerbaijan is building a “green energy corridor.” At the same time, environmental risks are mounting — Almaty and Dushanbe are battling urban smog, Belarus has legalized construction that bypasses master plans, and new coal-related penalties are being prepared in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk region. Globally, the signals are alarming: ice is melting rapidly, water stress is intensifying, and CO₂ emissions continue to threaten the 1.5 °C goal.

New opportunities for activists are listed at the end of this issue.

We’re always open to hearing your thoughts, ideas, or stories — don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Sincerely,

The CAN EECCA Team

Three years left to limit warming to 1.5C, leading scientists warn

The Earth could be doomed to breach the symbolic 1.5C warming limit in as little as three years at current levels of carbon dioxide emissions. That's the stark warning from more than 60 of the world's leading climate scientists in the most up-to-date assessment of the state of global warming.Nearly 200 countries agreed to try to limit global temperature rises to 1.5C above levels of the late 1800s in a landmark agreement in 2015, with the aim of avoiding some of the worst impacts of climate change. But countries have continued to burn record amounts of coal, oil and gas and chop down carbon-rich forests - leaving that international goal in peril.

Emperor penguins show dramatic decline in one region of Antarctica, satellite photos show

The estimated population of 16 penguin colonies declined 22% mainly because of climate change that’s shrinking the amount of available sea ice. The estimated population of 16 penguin colonies — visible in satellite photos taken between 2009 and 2024 — had declined 22% during that period mainly because of climate change that’s shrinking the amount of available sea ice. It’s unclear whether this drop is seen across the continent, scientists said.
