European countries are pocketing billions of euros in profit on unsustainable Greek debt, further burdening a country with widespread unemployment, where more than half the children live in poverty. Sign now and ask Eurozone countries to return this money to Greece. |
Hi,
We learnt this week that on Monday European ministers will decide whether to give back -or not- more than 8 billion euros to Greeks. That’s more than half of what Greece spent in healthcare in 2014! [1]
Finance ministers in the countries that use the Euro have been dragging their feet on doing the right thing for more than a year because they illegitimately keep billions of profit made on Greek debt since 2012. Following peoples’ mobilization, they agreed to return half of it last June [2] - but what about the rest of the money?
Nadia Calviño, Spain’s finance minister, could be supportive of returning the other half: she could be the champion for our cause inside the meeting! But for that purpose she needs to be clear that citizens back her up, that we’ll be the uproar she needs to be taken seriously on Monday if she speaks up for justice and demands eurozone countries pay back what they owe to Greece.
Sign the petition to tell Calviño that her negotiating hard to return 8 billion euros to Greek people would make her a true European leader in the eyes of thousands!

But some countries like Spain are blackmailing Greeks: a few days ago they were threatened that these billions will be blocked if Greece doesn’t return to the path of austerity. Despite their exit from the Troika programme, Greece is still under pressure - and our finance ministers are using their debt as a bargaining chip.
Finally, on Monday the ministers from these countries will have to openly say what they think about this matter. Nadia Calviño will be there too, and if she knows thousands of citizens are counting on her to champion the return of the money, she’d have an incentive to negotiate hard for it. It’s important for ministers to have high levels of public support, and knowing she’d become a true leader in our eyes, Calviño could take our demand forward in the meeting. Sign to let Calviño know you want her to be a true leader!

PS. This isn’t about money - it’s about the kind of people we want to be. Europeans don’t want to profit from Greece’s despair, they can no longer act unchecked and claim to act on our behalf. Together we can remind the Spanish minister: Europe is about solidarity, not greed! Take action to make this clear!
