Last year, the European Parliament voted to phase out high emission biofuels like palm oil by 2030 in the EU.
This is an important result because palm oil production:
1) Contributes to climate change. Large areas of forests in Southeast Asia are being cut down to make room for crops like palm or soybean oil, which are then used in Europe to fuel our cars. Deforestation releases tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere contributing to climate change and making the region warmer.
2) Endangers orangutans. The massive expansion of palm oil plantations has fueled the destruction of forests where orangutans live. Because of deforestation, the population of orangutans has decreased by approximately 50 percent.
3) Encourages the use of food as fuel. Biofuels have been listed as an important factor in contributing to rising world food prices. By allowing or even subsidizing the food based biofuels industry, the EU is contributing to food price volatility, and driving land grabs in some of the world's poorest communities.
Although we have the support of the EU Parliament, to ensure the banning of biofuels in the EU we still need the European Commission to execute their vote by February 1, 2019. We would like to start a campaign "No Palm Oil in our Tanks" to ensure that the Commission acts to ban harmful biofuels like palm oil from circulation. Do you think it's a good idea?
