As I write this, devastating climate impacts are happening all around the world, not only are we seeing it on the news or physically experiencing it, but it is drastically impacting human lives. It can feel overwhelming at times to take it all in.... But we can’t despair, the global movement is growing and we are working together to hold governments accountable, stop funding fossil fuel projects and transition away from gas, oil and coal, immediately. The anticipated Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report was just released, and 195 scientists confirmed that human activities have contributed to the climate crisis. This report comes out as we see the devastating climate impacts unfolding around the world. But, as alarming as the report may be, we want to focus on the good. The fact is we know who is responsible for the climate crisis: fossil fuel corporations. And we know how we can stop them: by cutting off the money that funds these projects and channeling people power to demand an immediate transition away from fossil fuels. Good news! A Global Alliance for a Green New Deal Has Launched
The Global Alliance for a Green New Deal was launched on 19 July, 2021 as a public online event with pioneering lawmakers likeTanzanian politician Zitto Kabwe from Tanzania and US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. A bit of background on this; politicians from around the world united to increase global momentum for a #GreenNewDeal with the main focus to transform societies and economies to being greener and more just. The Fed Needs a Climate Leader
350 USA launched a new campaign called #FossilFreeFed calling for a Fossil Free Federal Reserve. As some may know the Fed is considered the referee of the economy and was created to regulate the economy for the people. In the face of climate chaos, the Fed needs to do better for the people. This campaign is calling out President Joe Biden to nominate a climate leader as Fed Chair. Here is how you can get involved and make your contribution;
Why is Indonesia Seen as One of the World’s Leading Coal Exporters and Consumers?
Indonesia has climbed the world rankings when it comes to countries that export and consume coal. BNI is one of the country’s state owned banks and is the third largest funder of fossil fuel in the country. With that being said, you understand where the problem is right? The bank needs to be held accountable for its involvement in the fossil fuel industry. Surely, with the many climate emergencies happening globally that should be the perfect indicator and reminder that we NEED to phase out coal. We can put pressure on these institutions and demand that they stop funding fossil fuels now.; 350.org is working to end fossil fuel finance. Follow the momentum here. The #ACCGoFossilFree campaign had a dedicated week of action in Aotearoa, New Zealand calling out the major public fund Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) to go fossil free. Some amazing footage from the actions that took place during that week;
CLIMATE IMPACTS Deadly Floods Devastate Communities in Central Europe Several European countries were hit with severe flooding claiming the lives of over 120 people and hundreds unaccounted for. It was reported that entire villages were destroyed, bridges collapsed, and hundreds of thousands of residents were left without electricity. The videos and images that circulated were beyond heartbreaking. Sadly if global heating continues to take us beyond the 1.5°C threshold then catastrophic floods like this could become a yearly occurrence for millions of Europeans. Let’s continue to put pressure on our governments so they stop funding fossil fuels.
