By now, you may
have heard about palm oil: it's a substance used in around
half of Western products as a preservative, appearing in
everything from foods to bath soaps. And the way we
farm it results in rampant animal deaths as well as worsening
climate change. That's why it's so shocking to
realize a prominent vegan butter brand, the ubiquitous Earth
Balance, is actually involved in this cruelty. In every single
margarine tub it sells, its products are laden with palm oil.
Earth Balance says it supposedly uses "ethically-sourced" palm
oil, but there is no such thing. And with each tub consumers buy, more tropical
forests go up in smoke — burning screaming, innocent,
endangered orangutans with them.
In fact, palm oil
production is actually the leading cause of orangutan
extinction. To farm oil palm trees, nearly 50,000
square miles of these primates' tropical home forests have
been rapidly cleared to make room for plantations. Often, the
fastest way to remove these forests is with fire. In the past
few years, wildlife sanctuaries have seen huge increases in
the number of horrifically burnt orangutans needing immediate,
life-saving care. Meanwhile, these tropical forests are some
of the most important carbon sinks in the world. Once they are
destroyed, they can no longer absorb greenhouse gases from the
atmosphere — and to make matters worse, all of their stored
carbon is released. All the experts agree: we need to
stop using palm oil. Sign the petition to tell Earth Balance to
become truly animal- and environmentally-friendly by
using other ingredients instead of deadly palm
oil!
