Celebrates Earth Day in Pankisi Valley, Kakheti

Village Jokolo –
USAID’s Waste Management Technologies in Regions (WMTR)
program is
celebrating the 46th annual Earth Day with local youth of Pankisi
Valley by
hosting an event dedicated to sustainable waste management and
tree planting
activities.
The motto of this year’s Earth Day
celebration is to plant 7.8 billion trees
for the Earth, to get rid of
fossil fuels and make cities 100% renewable and
to take the momentum from
Paris Climate Summit and to build on it.
USAID/Caucasus Mission
Director, Douglas H. Ball, Deputy Minister of
Environment and Natural
Resources Protection of Georgia, Besarion Abashidze
and students of local
school of village Jokolo will celebrate Earth Day by
planting trees on a 1.5
ha area that was cleared from small scale illegal
dumpsites. Afforestation
of the mentioned area will be organized in order to
repurpose the territory
to prevent future littering.
Earth Day Fair in Jokolo will also
feature a Do It Yourself stand, where
kids will have the opportunity to make
new creative art items out of waste,
play e-game: Sort and Recycle,
developed within the framework of the program
and Eco Club stand were the
audience will get acquainted with eco club
activities of Telavi Public
School №1.
The celebration of the event focuses on waste
management and forest
resources to respond to the motto of Earth Day 2016,
as well as on
recognition of young people as a driving force in global
development and
promotion of environmentally friendly behaviour for welfare
of the future
generation.

WMTR aims to support the Georgian government to
establish adequate waste
management system with pilot activities in Adjara
and Kakheti to support
cleaner and healthier environment for the people of
Georgia.
