Right now, Sudan is enduring the
largest humanitarian crisis in the world. Yet the wider
international community continues to meet this suffering
of millions of people with devastating
silence.
Two years ago, a brutal civil
war began, and even now, Sudan's people are still
trapped in an unrelenting nightmare. More than
150,000 people have died. Entire cities have been
laid to waste. Refugee camps have been bombed, civilians
massacred, and the threat of famine looms over hundreds
of thousands of families. In fact, almost 25 million
people — half the population — are going
hungry.
Recent attacks on displacement camps
near El Fasher in Darfur have killed hundreds and forced
over 400,000 people to flee once again — often with
nowhere to go. In Darfur alone, more than 600,000
people are facing deadly famine
conditions.
Despite the immense suffering,
Sudan has been largely ignored by the international
community. Other global crises in different areas of the
world have pushed Sudan's agony off the front pages -
but that does not make the need for urgent action any
less real.
Sudan's civilians — many of them
children — have already endured the unimaginable.
They deserve more than our heartbreak; they deserve our
solidarity, our advocacy, and our urgent action.
