Vladimir,
Across the
United States, students are suffering. The collective trauma
of living through a global pandemic coupled with the
disruption in routine is enough to make anyone fall behind.
But for one Black teenager in Eastern Michigan, who has a
learning disability, falling behind in school resulted
in her being locked behind bars. Grace was required
to wake up on time for class and complete certain coursework
when her school transitioned to online learning. According to
Judge Mary Ellen Brennan, when Grace failed to do these
things, it made her a threat to the community.
Sign the petition to demand that Grace's
caseworker and the prosecutor bring this case in front of
Judge Mary Ellen Brennan again since it is clear that this
girl should not be locked up!
As it turns out, Grace's
performance in school was on par with her predominantly white
peers. But the caseworker didn't even bother to find out
whether her performance was normal — she just saw a Black teen
and assumed the worst. The caseworker also didn't bother to
learn that Grace has ADHD, making distance learning
especially difficult for her. The school didn't
provide any extra support to Grace for her learning disability
and then the system locked her up over it. Even worse, the
extremely contagious disease COVID-19 is running rampant in
detention facilities all over the U.S., putting Grace's health
in danger. Sign the petition to get Grace out of
juvenile detention, where she is at risk of contracting
COVID-19!
Thank you,

15-year-old child is locked up during a deadly pandemic for
not turning in a couple homework assignments. Sign on to get her out! |
