“Clean Up Georgia-Phase III” Project - Awareness
Raising Meetings
EAWM continues awareness raising meetings in
the regions of Georgia in the
framework of the “Clean Up Georgia – Phase
III” Project. The aim of the
meetings is to inform the municipalities on the
hazardous waste, in
particular, chlorine/chemicals, on the territory of
Georgia and its negative
impact on human health and the
environment.
In June 2017, the meetings took place in Adigeni,
Kareli and Ambrolauri
municipalities. Project coordinators delivered a
presentation on “Pollution
of the environment by Hazardous Waste (Chlorine)
and its Negative Impact on
Human Health and Environment” and discussed the
threats caused by chlorine
(including the cases on the territory of
Georgia), utilization methods,
security measures and issues related to HW
management problems, the role of
the government, prevention,
etc.
Project coordinators instructed participants on the safety
response measures
to be addressed to avoid similar cases. In addition,
participants discussed
the negative impact of expired chemicals on human
health existing in school
laboratories.
During the meeting in
Ambrolauri, the Head of Municipality informed EAWM
coordinators of the
possible burial of chlorine cylinders on the territory
of village Uravi,
where arsenic was being processed in the Soviet times. The
Head of
Municipality had no information regarding the quantity and substance
in the
buried cylinders.
Project coordinators distributed EAWM flyers
and Emergency Response
Communication Plan among the participants of the
meetings. Meetings raised
interest among participants, who expressed their
readiness to cooperate with
the project.
The project “Clean
Up Georgia-Phase III” is implemented by a Consortium of
NGOs “Ecological
Awareness and Waste Management”, Georgian Society of Nature
Explorers
“Orchis” and “Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the
Earth -Georgia” with
the financial support of the Swedish Government.
