Dear
Friend,
I want to celebrate a major victory with you. Even though
it didn't make headlines, it is a huge step forward in our
fight for a nuclear-free, carbon-free world. And NIRS and our
supporters played a huge role.
We
stopped nuclear power at the COP24 Global Climate Summit!
For the first week of the summit, the nuclear industry was
given free rein to promote its poison power, hijacking the
focus of the COP24 Global Climate Summit. NIRS and the Don't
Nuke the Climate coalition put out an urgent call to action
from Poland, with a petition calling for 100% renewable energy
and no subsidies or financing for nuclear power.
Thousands of NIRS supporters like you responded. It
made all the difference.
Germany's Environmental Minister, Svenja Schulze, not only
accepted our petition--she thanked us for it and signed the
petition herself. But most importantly, Minister Schulze
stated Germany will oppose pro-nuclear policies
in global climate negotiations AND oppose
subsidies and financing for nuclear power under the
Paris Climate Treaty.
Celebrate this victory with
NIRS–and help us keep up the momentum!
This isn't the end of the story. We have to keep on
fighting to stop nuclear power, both in the US and
internationally. Powerful countries like the US still favor
nuclear power and are resisting the transition to 100%
renewable energy.
We don't always win with a major announcement or front-page
news. We show up. We organize. We mobilize. We win small
victories. And we build on them. And build. And build.
That's what we did last week. We protested
nuclear industry events. We informed
and organized other climate activists. We called out
nuclear power's human
rights violations. We published a major
report. And we rallied
and marched
and mobilized.
Help
us keep it going in 2019.
Germany's statement didn't make
headlines, but it meant that nuclear power didn't get written
into the climate "rulebook" countries negotiated at COP24. And
it means that Germany–one of the largest donors to the $100
billion Green Climate Fund–will not let any of that money go
to nuclear power.
This is what NIRS does. We start small, and we build big.
Sometimes fast, a lot of times slow. Step by step, year by
year. NIRS is a small organization, that organizes and support
grassroots activism across the country. This is what we have
done for 40 years.
And we can only do it with supporters like you.
2018 has been a tumultuous year. The kind of year when we
need to celebrate our victories–and use them to inspire and
motivate us to build on next year.
So
make a year-end gift to stop nuclear power in
2019!
Thanks for all you do!
