Something’s rotten in the Scottish Isles.
As you read this, salmon corporations are trying to
persuade local governments to let them build megafarms off the
country’s wildest, most unspoiled coastlines.
The farms would fill the crystal-clear ocean water
with faeces, uneaten fishmeal and dead salmon. These farms
even threaten the porpoises, sea birds, and seals
who call these isles home.
Local residents have been fighting to defend their
beautiful islands from the salmon industry’s greed. You can
help them by demanding the Scottish government block all new
salmon farms off the country’s coasts and in its seas!
Tell
the Scottish government: No new salmon farms!
On their farms, multi-million pound companies like
Mowi and the Scottish Salmon Company cram thousands of tonnes of
fish into cages to become ‘sustainable’ filets, creating
the perfect conditions for disease and sea lice to spread.
The Scottish Salmon Company is so notorious for this it’s
been called the ‘liciest’ of its kind in Scotland.
Meanwhile, Mowi was put under investigation for
possibly misreporting the amount of chemicals -- like hydrogen
peroxide and pesticides -- it uses to control those outbreaks.
That’s not all. To keep hungry seals out of their fish pens, many
salmon farms install sonic devices that could harm nearby
whales and porpoises. And if these don’t work, they can
apply for a licence to shoot the seals. 49 seals were shot
by Scottish salmon farmers in 2017 alone.
Salmon corporations clearly have a long way to go until
their farms are truly clean, safe and healthy enough for Scotland’s
seas and the creatures that call it home. And until that
happens, we can’t let them off the hook.
Save
Scotland's pristine waters from giant fish
farms!
Together, we’ve already forced change in this industry. Just last
year, over 33,000 members like you demanded better hygiene on salmon
farms, making headlines and pressuring the authorities into
championing stricter standards for waste pollution and sea lice
control.
So we’re asking you to join us again. And that starts
with demanding the Scottish government halt salmon farm expansion
right now -- and keep this industry from steamrolling the country’s
delicate coasts and seas.
Tell
the Scottish government: No new salmon
farms!
