Canada's
leadership on marine mammals' rights has been exhilarating and
inspiring. In June 2019, the country took a huge step
towards ending the captivity of whales and dolphins by passing
the "Free Willy" bill. The law made it illegal to
keep any cetaceans in captivity, and also banned the import
and export of ALL marine mammals in Canada. Luckily, by that
point, few Canadian facilities were holding marine animals
behind glass anymore. The only two parks left were the Vancouver
Aquarium — with almost 40 cetacean deaths in just 63 years —
and Marineland, which had been the scene of a multitude of
whale, orca, and walrus deaths.
Comparatively, far more
marine animals are currently being held against their will in
U.S. facilities. From theme parks like the notorious
SeaWorld to the Mirage Hotel and Casino's Dolphin Habitat in
Las Vegas, marine mammals are being used as props and treated
as money-making machines across the country. They're forced to
jump through literal hoops day in and day out, do
backflips on command, endure hours of grating noise and shouts
from onlookers, and more — all just for a handful of sardines
in exchange. These intelligent, social creatures
deserve better. The next step is clear: the U.S. must
ban cetacean captivity nationally as well. This cruelty must
end! Sign the petition demanding that the U.S. ban
dolphin and whale captivity!
Thank you,

P.S. Whales and
dolphins have the right to live free just as we do. The only way to ensure that is to pass a federal
law prohibiting their captivity. |
