Intimidation,
threats, lawsuits – we need laws with teeth to stop legal
bullies!
Dear friends of the rainforests,
Powerful players – corporations and
well‑connected individuals – are using threats, intimidation, and
legal maneuvers to silence those who defend people and the
planet, including Rainforest Rescue. These SLAPPs (strategic
lawsuits against public participation) target journalists,
Indigenous communities, and environmental groups so that abuses
remain hidden and profits continue to flow: When our partners in
Brazil stood with the Ka’apor people against a destructive carbon
project, we were hit with four cease‑and‑desist letters designed to
tie up our limited resources in a legal battle and distract us from
our mission.
Germany is now drafting an anti‑SLAPP
law that could set an international precedent – but a dangerous
loophole remains, because out‑of‑court intimidation is not
properly covered and would remain a favored weapon of legal
bullies. Tell the German government that human rights, democracy,
and a living planet are everybody’s business – and that defenders
deserve real protection – by adding your name to our petition
and standing with those who refuse to be silenced.

Malaysia:
company illegally fells trees – and faces Indigenous justice
The logging company Junan Wood has been
found to have illegally felled trees in the Dayak forest. Beyond
investigations by the Malaysian authorities, the company is now
being brought to justice under the traditional law of the Indigenous
people. Our partner Matek Geram was instrumental in stopping the
destruction.

industry
From southern Mexico to Honduras,
communities poisoned, displaced and criminalized by the oil palm
plantation industry speak out. The documentary “Roots of Freedom” is
their story – of loss, resistance and futures rooted in land, water
and food, not monocultures, told in their own voices.
