A billion-dollar gold mine operation could push these rare, ancient apes to extinction. Greedy New Mining Operations Risk Extinction for Oldest, Rarest Orangutans on Earth Sign Now      Tapanuli apes are both the oldest of all orangutan species, as well as the most rare, with only 800 individuals left alive today. They only live in Indonesia — where a mining company is now seeking to excavate a gold deposit supposedly worth several billion dollars. With so few members of this species left alive, even a small disruption could spell doom for their entire population. And mining operations have more than just a "small" impact. Mining involves clearing out forests, constructing new roads, bringing in large and loud construction equipment, and terrorizing the Earth. Scientists are pointing out that even harming just 1% of the tiny Tapanuli population each year would quickly lead to extinction. That's especially true if female orangutans are hurt or killed, since Tapanuli only mate and reproduce once or twice in a decade. And what is all of this for? Just so humans can stare at their nice shiny golden objects. Is that really worth potentially exterminating an entire ancient species? We can't let greed, billionaires, and corporations destroy this safe haven for the oldest and rarest orangutans on planet Earth!
