Dear
subscribers,
Ecolur, a CAN EECCA
member organization, prepared a detailed review
of Armenia’s NDCs. Uzbekistan set a new record
for renewable energy generation. In Belarus,
authorities reopened lynx hunting, raising
concerns among
conservationists.
Africa recognized
ecocide as a priority for the first time, while
new research highlights risks of additional oil
extraction and the importance of protecting
communities’ environmental rights.
At
the end of this issue — new opportunities for
activists.
Best
regards, CAN

Armenia’s NDCs: Steps Toward
Emissions Reduction and Climate Accountability,
Part 1 Armenia remains highly
vulnerable to climate change. Average
temperatures have already risen by 1.23 °C and
could increase by almost 3 °C by mid-century.
About half of the territory faces
desertification, and up to 80% of agricultural
land requires irrigation.
Armenia’s NDCs: Updates and
Challenges, Part
2 Armenia submitted its
updated NDC (3.0), pledging a 40% emissions
reduction by 2030 compared to 1990. Plans
include increasing renewable energy to 50%,
expanding solar and wind capacity, and boosting
forest cover to 12.9%. Experts note gaps in
funding, waste management, and emissions
monitoring.
WWF
Ukraine Launches Online Forest Restoration
Platform WWF Ukraine and IT
company SoftServe introduced a platform to
support communities, businesses, and governments
in restoring forests. It provides step-by-step
guidance, spatial maps, and advice on selecting
suitable sites and tree species for sustainable,
climate-friendly reforestation.
Belarus
Reopens Lynx Hunting: Conservationists Warn of
Risks From October 1, 2025,
Belarus permitted lynx hunting for the first
time in 40 years. While some local populations
have reached threshold levels, lynx remain rare
and vulnerable, with slow reproduction and high
kitten mortality. Experts warn hunting may
threaten long-term population
stability.
Kazakhstan Prepares to Ratify
Kigali Amendment Kazakhstan announced
plans to ratify the Kigali Amendment to the
Montreal Protocol, targeting hydrofluorocarbon
(HFC) emissions. Vice Minister Marat Oshurbayev
noted the country is inventorying HFCs and
preparing a phased reduction plan, strengthening
its contribution to ozone protection and climate
action.
Russia
Withdraws from Plutonium Disposal Agreement with
the US President
Vladimir Putin signed a law denouncing the 2000
agreement under which both countries were to
dispose of 34 tonnes of surplus weapons-grade
plutonium. The plan to use it as nuclear fuel
faced technical, financial, and political
obstacles, and was never implemented,
contributing to disputes over the treaty.
Uzbekistan Generates Record 9
Billion kWh of Renewable
Energy In 2025, the country’s
solar and wind plants produced a record
9 billion kWh, saving 2.73 billion m³ of gas and
preventing nearly 4 million tonnes of emissions.
Renewables now account for 23% of the energy
mix, signaling an accelerated transition to
sustainable energy.
Azerbaijan Hosts First Regional
Green Education
Seminar Representatives from
Central Asia and the South Caucasus discussed
integrating sustainability and climate topics
into national curricula. Participants emphasized
education’s role in building environmental
responsibility and preparing societies for
climate challenges.

AI Could
Unlock Another Trillion Barrels of Oil, Emitting
400 Billion Tonnes of
CO₂ Wood Mackenzie
estimates AI could enable extraction of up to
1 trillion additional barrels from existing
fields by 2050, leading to 400 billion tonnes of
extra emissions—equivalent to the world’s output
over the past decade.
Global
Forest Resources Assessment
2025 The UN released its
updated Global Forest Resources Assessment
(1990–2025), detailing changes in forest
management, use, and condition worldwide. The
report highlights how forests respond to climate
and socio-economic pressures and informs
sustainable forest policy.
Civil
Space and Environmental Defenders Are Key to
Climate Justice Amnesty International
