United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is urging Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders to engage in dialogue following Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Ersin Tatar's announcement that he planned to reopen beaches in the long-abandoned town of Varosha, which is protected by a 1984 UN Security Council resolution. Such unilateral actions could harm efforts to establish peace in the region, Guterres warns.

United Nations
Sanctions implemented by the United States, the EU and other western countries violate the United Nations Charter and impede efforts to fight the coronavirus, a group of 26 countries said this week at a UN General Assembly human rights committee meeting. The group noted that both Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet have sought the end of sanctions amid the pandemic.

The government of South Sudan is working in partnership with UNICEF on a program aimed at fighting child marriage in the country, where more than half of all girls are married before the age of 18. UNICEF also released a report detailing progress against child marriage in Bangladesh this week, warning leaders that they must increase efforts 17-fold to meet the sustainable development goal of ending the practice by 2030.

Wealthy nations are stalling on efforts against climate change and are being vague about their promises to help lower income countries with climate efforts, says United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa.
