Hi,

MEPs have just approved Ursula von der Leyen as the next European Commission President. [1]

It’s the EU’s top job, and just two weeks ago she didn’t have a single commitment on the climate crisis. But in response, we sent over 75,000 messages to MEPs urging them to raise this in their meetings with her and to hold back their votes if she couldn’t come up with a bold plan. And while she didn’t turn into the kind of climate leader we’d hope for, it’s clear she’s been listening.

In just days, she’s gone from nothing to agreeing that Europe isn’t doing enough and committing to increase its climate targets. She also plans to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent and wants to mobilise the money to do it. [2]

It’s not perfect, and for now, it’s just hasty words. But it shows that our pressure is working -- if in just two weeks we can move her this far on climate, imagine what we can do in the next two months before she appoints her cabinet. We can shape the future of Europe together.

The work doesn’t stop here. Von der Leyen will now pick 28 Commissioners who will help her lead Europe -- they will be responsible for everything from the climate, to jobs, to security and the rule of law. [3]

And we’ll do the same thing we’ve been doing these last few weeks to make sure we get commissioners who represent our vision for Europe -- a Europe that puts people and planet first. We will send even more messages, do call-ins, meet with MEPs, put together stunts in Brussels, and join partners in the biggest #StrikeForClimate on the 20th of September.

Will you join us to help shape the future of Europe?

I’M IN!

It’ll be the busiest WeMove has ever been, and it’s going to take every one of us reading this email to make it happen. Help us maximise our impact by chipping in to fund the campaign to shape the future of Europe.

With hope and determination,

Fatima (London), Olga (Bologna), Jörg (Lübeck) and the entire WeMove team
