Dear
subscribers,
Water ecosystems across
Central Asia are under threat: the Amu Darya is
drying up, Pamir glaciers are melting, and the
Caspian Sea is rapidly losing water. These
changes put food security and the livelihoods of
coastal communities at risk. The region faces
major challenges: Kazakhstan’s carbon-intensive
economy, Uzbekistan’s water shortages, and
minimal progress on emissions reduction in
Belarus.
At the same time, there
are positive steps: Moldova is expanding solar
energy, Armenia is joining a global coalition
for disaster-resilient infrastructure, and the
Silk Road Knowledge conference in Almaty will
focus on climate solutions.
Globally, oil and gas
companies continue to ignore methane emissions,
while Fridays For Future is planning a global
climate strike, #JustTransitionNow, at COP30,
calling for a fair transition away from fossil
fuels and investments in renewable
energy.
At the
end of this newsletter — new opportunities for
activists.
Best
regards, CAN

At a
Climate Crossroads: Post-Soviet States Seek a
Green Path but Lose
Nature The region’s countries
declare ambitious climate goals but face
economic and structural barriers in practice.
Kazakhstan’s economy remains carbon-intensive,
while Uzbekistan suffers from water shortages
and poor coordination of green
initiatives.
In Kyrgyzstan, melting
glaciers threaten food security, and in Belarus,
emissions cuts are mostly formal, with little
real progress. Without integrating ecology into
the economy and ensuring active civil society
participation, these ambitions risk remaining
only on paper.
Amu
Darya Drying Up: Threats to Central Asia’s
Ecosystems An expedition in
Uzbekistan revealed that due to climate change
and reduced flow, the inter-river reservoir and
delta lakes remain underfilled, threatening
biodiversity and local communities. Experts
stress the need for cross-border cooperation and
highlight measures to protect ecosystems, such
as Ramsar designation for lakes and the creation
of the Geopark Aral, aiming for UNESCO
inclusion.
Pamir
Glaciers Losing
Mass Since 2018,
northwestern Pamir has experienced sharply
reduced precipitation and snow cover,
accelerating glacier melt, reducing river flows,
and threatening water supplies for millions.
Researchers warn the process is irreversible
without global climate
action.
Moldova
Expands Solar
Energy Moldova plans to launch
several large solar projects by 2025, including
a 15 MW plant in Ștefan Vodă. These initiatives
will reduce dependence on fossil fuels, increase
energy security, and bring the country closer to
EU renewable energy
targets.
Armenia
Joins Global Coalition for Disaster-Resilient
Infrastructure Armenia is set to
ratify the Coalition for Disaster-Resilient
Infrastructure (CDRI), an international
partnership aimed at strengthening
infrastructure resilience to climate change and
natural hazards. The Indian initiative includes
technical support, research, and joint training
to develop sector
expertise.
Azerbaijan Sounds Alarm Over
Caspian Sea
Levels The Caspian Sea is
dropping rapidly, threatening coastal ecosystems
and biodiversity. Over the past five years,
water levels fell nearly 1 meter, and by 2.5
meters over 30 years, shrinking sturgeon
habitats and destroying wetlands.
Experts
Gather in Almaty to Discuss Regional Climate
Challenges On September 20, 2025,
the 5th Silk Road Knowledge conference in Almaty
will bring together researchers and
practitioners from Central Asia and Europe to
discuss climate mitigation and adaptation
strategies, from water management and
agriculture to energy transformation and youth
engagement.

Global
Climate Strike: #JustTransitionNow at COP30,
Brazil On November 14, during
the COP30 climate summit in Belém, Fridays For
Future will hold a global strike under
#JustTransitionNow, demanding a fair transition
from fossil fuels and investments in renewable
energy, protecting the most vulnerable
communities.
Oil
& Gas Companies Still Ignore Methane
Emissions For eight years, the
International Energy Agency has shown that the
oil and gas sector could cheaply cut methane
emissions, one of the most potent greenhouse
gases. Yet emissions continue to rise, and
voluntary measures and promises are insufficient
to meet the 1.5°C target.
Trump-Era Tariffs Limit Global
South’s Climate and Economic
Options US pressure forces
Global South countries, including Indonesia, to
ease control over critical resource exports like
nickel, limiting their ability to develop
industry and pursue a green transition.
Short-term tariff relief comes at the expense of
long-term economic and environmental
strategies.
