The
41st Congress of the Radical Party, which took
place in Rome from 5 to 7 July, adopted a new Statute, a General
Motion , (with 176 votes in favor) and
elected Secretary-General, Maurizio
Turco; Treasurer, Irene Testa; Honorary
President: Laura Arconti, longtime
militant, Abdelbasset Ben Hassan, President
of the Arab Institute for Human
Rights, Ambassador Giulio Maria Terzi di
Sant'Agata, former Minister of Foreign
Affairs, Sam Rainsy leader of the
opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party
(CNRP); and the members of the General
Council.

The
12th extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and
Government has launched operational
phase of the AfCFTA (African Continental Free
Trade Area).
The
agreement aims to increase trade between African
states and to accelerate the progress of regional
and continental integration by creating the
largest free area trade in the world, both in
terms of the number of countries
involved and by extension.
According
to the UN conference trade and development the
transition phase to the Continental Free Trade
Area alone could generate welfare gains of $16.1
billion and boost intra-African trade by 33 per
cent. According to the African Union
intra-African trade is likely to increase by 60%
by 2022 under the AfCFTA.

Amazon
deforestation accelerated more than 60% in June
over the same period last year, 769.1 square
kilometres were lost last month – a stark increase
from the 488.4 sq lost in June 2018, INPE’s data
showed. More than two-thirds of the Amazon are
located in Brazil and environmental groups blame
leader Bolsonero and his government for the
increase, sayng he has relaxed controls on
deforestation in the country.

On
sunday 7 july Iran announced it would start
enriching uranium above a concentration of 3.67%,
in breach of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of
Action (JCPOA). The US unilaterally withdrew from
the agreement in 2018. Deputy Foreign Minister
Abbas Araqchi said Iran still wanted to salvage
the deal but blamed European countries for failing
to live up to their own
commitments.

UN
human rights report published today urges the
Government of Venezuela to take immediate,
concrete measures to halt and remedy the grave
violations of economic, social, civil, political
and cultural rights documented in the country.
The
incidence of alleged extrajudicial killings by
security forces, particularly the special forces
(FAES), in the context of security operations has
been shockingly high, the report states. In 2018,
the Government registered 5,287 killings,
purportedly for “resistance to authority,” during
such operations. Between 1 January and 19 May this
year, another 1,569 people were killed, according
to Government figures.

Sudan.
Agreement between the Transitional Military
Council and opposition alliance forces in the
country for a three-year transition period: the
establishment of a supreme executive council made
up of 5 soldiers and 5 members of the opposition,
plus an eleventh member chosen by both parties.
Mohammed el-Hassan Labat, mediator of the African
Union, explained in a press conference the stages
of the agreement: for the first 21 months, the
Council will be under military leadership and for
the next 18 months under the guidance of
civilians..
