Background
This event will consider the role of integrated drought approaches, particularly, ecosystems, innovation and coordinating efforts of different actors, in building resilience to drought. It builds on the International Drought Resilience Alliance launched last week as a space to work together to steer the response to drought disasters from the emergency response in wide use today, to building long term drought resilience.

Drought resilience as the way of the future is premised on the need to minimize drought disasters, which the science projects will only get worse given the greenhouse gases emitted thus far and the extreme events that will follow. But it is also premised on the fact that, in most cases, drought disasters can be minimized through advance preparation for two reasons. First, because they emerge slowly and can be anticipated and planned for. Second, because droughts are not determined by the absence of rain alone. They are also fueled by human action, such as how land is managed and the crops grown.

About the UNCCD
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the global vision and voice for land. We unite governments, scientists, policymakers, private sector and communities around a shared vision and global action to restore and manage the world’s land for the sustainability of humanity and the planet. Much more than an international treaty signed by 197 parties, UNCCD is a multilateral commitment to mitigating today’s impacts of land degradation and advancing tomorrow’s land stewardship in order to provide food, water, shelter and economic opportunity to all people in an equitable and inclusive manner.
