US President Joe Biden has
reversed a decision by his predecessor to
withdraw from the World Health Organization and
plans to join the WHO's COVAX initiative, which
aims to distribute 1.8 billion vaccines in
poorer countries this year. WHO Director-General
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus welcomed the
decision, while advising that the global
coronavirus case count will likely hit 100

The United Nations Treaty on the
Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons comes into force
today, despite not being signed by any of the
world's nuclear powers. "The treaty is an
important step towards the goal of a world free
of nuclear weapons and a strong demonstration of
support for multilateral approaches to nuclear
disarmament," says UN Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres, commending the 51 countries that have

in exchange for food and medical supplies in
Ethiopia's Tigray region are unacceptable, and
authorities in the country must enforce a zero
tolerance policy against sex crimes, says
Pramila Patten, United Nations special
representative on sexual violence in conflict.
Patten is urging Ethiopian officials to allow
humanitarian workers to access the area without
