Thunderclap

Messaging and Social Media

I am also sharing here Top lines and tweet suggestions that can be used as of today to keep the attention focused on climate as did the Global Risk report last week. I am also attaching the general step up messaging for further reference.

Top lines:

-          The 2018 Global Risk Report tells us that we are on the brink of catastrophic consequences for humanity and the economy if we don’t act urgently and fast, changing our current ways and moving to a decarbonized economy, completely powered by renewable energy

-          Extreme weather events will from here onwards be most likely and impactful. Temperatures are continuing on an uphill curve and wildfires are raging furiously killing 100 people in Portugal alone last year. Hurricanes are getting fiercer and costlier with 2017 marking the most expensive season ever, raising the bill to 300 billion USD in the United States alone for Hurricanes Irma and Harvey. Storms are what is forcing people from their homes most and responsible for 76% of total displacement

-          Climate change is exacerbating other risks. Rising temperatures and weather events like storms, hurricanes and droughts are aggravating water crises, food shortages and migration, which in turn are worsening poverty, security and geopolitical problems and weakening social cohesion. All these are major concerns for the leaders from all walks gathering in Davos

-          The World Bank estimates that water scarcity can put 6% of GDP at risk by 2050. Warming beyond 1.5C will cause sea level rise that can wipe out entire communities and displace others and threaten our agricultural systems and food security

-          The time to act is now. We must rapidly step up and transform our ways by deeply decarbonizing the economy, shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy, reforming industry and agriculture and protecting our forests, our best and most reliable carbon sinks

-          We heard in Davos that the inequality gap is widening and there is a greater need for inclusive development. This is more of a reason why the transformation process that we need to undertake should be inclusive and should put people’s choices and interests at the center benefitting everyone from the transition to a carbon free economic system

-          The current economic upswing gives leaders and businesses an opportunity to invest in sustainable infrastructure and renewables. These investments improve health and life quality and make business sense at the same time. In just a couple of years, renewable energy will be cheaper than fossil fuels. Renewable energy currently employs more than 9.8 million people and this number is expected to double in the next 10 years. Transformation and decarbonization if implemented justly will secure economic growth, enhance equality, provide energy and eradicate poverty leaving no one behind

-          Tackling risks and climate change requires collective effort. Nothing tells a better story of multilateralism than the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals. They are rare universal agendas that succeeded in garnering the backing of all countries. But to properly implement the Paris Agreement and keep warming below 1.5C, governments, businesses, states, cities, universities and other actors must all step up and enhance their climate plans and commitments and transition faster to zero carbon economies

-          We are now on a trajectory of 3C warming or more.  This can have devastating impacts on an already fractured world suffering from migration, torn societies, poverty, pollution and major security and geopolitical challenges.  But we can do more if countries step up, lead and commit to enhancing their climate commitments by 2020 under the UN process

-          It is true that the Global Risk Report paints a gloomy picture for this year but there are many opportunities for countries, businesses and other non-state actors to step up and change that situation. Under the UN process, countries can make the Talanoa dialogue, where they discuss efforts to strengthen their climate commitments, a success and commit in COP24 to more ambitious action by 2020

-          The meetings of the G20 in Argentina and G7 in Canada are also important opportunities for countries to prove they are serious about protecting humanity from the risks we are contemplating and posed by climate change. The agenda of these meetings is set in Davos. The Global Climate Action Summit organized in California in September is another occasion for all actors to demonstrate ambitious climate action. The release of the 1.5C report by the International Panel on Climate Change in October will also present a unique and important opportunity for countries to seize and act upon wisely and quickly to protect people and livelihoods from the devastating impacts of global warming

-          Many present in Davos are stepping up, from progressive governments like the Climate Vulnerable Forum countries and Sweden to leaders championing international cooperation like French President Macron, business executives like AXA’s Thomas Buberl, and young activists like Risalat Khan and Karuna Rana. At the One Planet Summit in Paris, we saw major companies and international development banks like the World Bank step up and divest from fossil fuels to help cut emissions and build a healthier, better future for all. If they can step up for shared benefits and a shared future, then everyone else can.

-          Rich and industrialized countries, many of which are represented in Davos, must take responsibility and step up investments to support poor and the vulnerable people, who are suffering most from climate change and related losses and damages

-          There is no time and no finances to waste. For people bearing the brunt of climate change, from the Philippines to Puerto Rico, every minute, every penny, and every fraction of warming count and is a matter of life and death. Science tells us that the emissions curve should bend downwards by 2020 to keep us at safe levels of warming. This means that this meeting and others coming ahead, gathering governments and other stakeholders, should mark the end of the fossil fuel era. Governments and public finance institutions must divest from funding and investing in fossil fuels immediately

More messaging:

-          Businesses are stepping up to the climate change challenge and capitalizing on trillion-dollar opportunities in clean energy, sustainable infrastructure and land use, and low carbon transport

-          Corporate leadership enables countries to set more ambitious climate targets. Similarly, national climate plans can enable businesses to go further, faster

-          Next year will be punctuated by important political moments such as the G20, Global Climate Action Summit in California and next year’s United Nations Climate Talks (COP24), when countries have an opportunity to STEP UP their climate ambition in the spirit of the Paris Agreement

-          Countries will also be meeting to take stock of their national climate plans in 2018, in a year-long process that should culminate with a clear set of signals from governments – together with businesses, cities and states – that they will strengthen their national commitments by 2020 and drive the large-scale change that we need

-          It is critical that business voices send a clear message to their national leaders and climate negotiators to STEP UP to the challenge of strengthening climate action plans and targets by 2020 – as called for by the Paris Agreement.
