Just one year ago,
on January 20, 2017, Donald J. Trump was inaugurated 45th president
of the United States.
To say that it was
a challenging year for our movement is a bit of an understatement.
Here’s
a look back at some of the troubling moves the White House made in
the last year, putting our health and future at risk.
CHOOSING
PROFITS OVER PEOPLE The White House has revoked or repealed
dozens
of environmental rules, including ones that prevent coal
companies from dumping mining debris into local streams and ban
offshore oil and gas drilling in the Atlantic and Arctic
oceans.
CLIMATE CHANGE
AND NATIONAL SECURITY In December 2017, the White House
dropped climate change from the list of global threats to the nation
included in the official National Security Strategy (NSS). This
action stands in stark contrast to the NSS under the Obama
Administration, which recognized
climate change as a key threat to national security.
EPA LEADERSHIP:
NOT THAT INTO PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT In October, the
Trump Administration proposed repealing
America’s Clean Power Plan, a centerpiece of President Obama’s
commitment to tackle climate change by reducing the carbon footprint
of US power plants.
THE PARIS
AGREEMENT In a speech from the White House Rose Garden,
President Trump announced the US would begin the formal process of
withdrawing from the Paris Agreement. President
Trump declared, “I was elected to represent the citizens of
Pittsburgh, not Paris.”
Despite these
dangerous moves by the White House, we’re as hopeful as ever.
This year, we’ll be training more new Climate
Reality Leaders than in any year before, urging supporters like
you to call your representatives and add your name to important
petitions and public comments, and hitting the streets to march for
climate, justice, and jobs.
If you’re ready to
get involved with the movement for climate solutions, sign
up now to learn about attending a Climate Reality Leadership Corps
training led by former US Vice President Al Gore. We’ll keep you
updated on our upcoming trainings and share stories about what it’s
like to become a Climate Reality Leader.
