04/11: International Climate March in Bonn

More than 100 organisations and alliances are calling to join this year’s Climate March that will take place in Bonn Germany on November 4th. The March “Fight for Climate Justice - End Coal” aims to send out a powerful message to the governments of the world: The decisions from Paris need to be followed by actions and a phase out of coal!

Organizers and supporters of the March:

The March is being organised by a broad alliance of civil society, such as environment and development organizations, churches, social movements and citizen initiatives. In Germany, these include e.g. the Climate Alliance Germany, an alliance with more than 100 members from Civil Society, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth Germany, Misereor, Oxfam and WWF. Internationally the Climate March is being supported e.g. by Climate Action Network International, Friends of the Earth International, CIDSE or Marcha Mundial do Clima – a forum with about 3000 members from social movements, NGOs, unions, universities and churches in about 100 countries. To see a list of supporters: https://www.klima-kohle-demo.de/netzwerk

Time, place and logistics

The Climate March will be starting on Nov 4 at 12 pm CEST in Bonn, Münsterplatz - delivering big balloons symbolically filled with CO2 from the coal power stations at Neurath to the UN Conference Centre in Bonn. There, the balloons will form the message “End Coal”. The region around Bonn represents one of the largest and most polluting coal mining regions in Europe. The final rally will take place at the Genscherallee until 4:30 pm with an international mix of speakers from e.g. the Pacific Islands, Latin America and Africa. In reference to the red lines drawn in Paris, we will wear red clothes. We invite you to bring a red jacket, hat or scarf to the March.

Timeline for press work

Please amplify the message of the March by announcing and reporting on it in your country. We suggest you to

·         announce the March on Wednesday, Nov 1st

·         report on the March on Saturday, Nov 4st. Watch out for the number of participants to be announced around 2 pm CEST on our twitter account.

Draft for a press release to announce the March on Wednesday, Nov 1st

Climate March for the COP23: Climate protection means to phase out coal

Fight for climate justice - End the coal!

Just ahead of the 23rd World Climate Conference (COP23) a broad alliance of civil society makes clear that the Paris climate agreement needs to be followed by further action to phase out fossil fuels such as coal. On Saturday, November 4, the alliance will demand clear progress in phasing out coal with a Climate March under the motto "Fight for Climate Justice - End Coal!". In the immediate vicinity of the COP23 and the largest lignite mining area of Europe, several thousand people will be demonstrating for the immediate implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement in the city of Bonn, Germany. More than 100 climate, environmental and development organizations, citizen initiatives and churches from all over world support the action.

Note to editors

Suggested messages to frame the Climate March in your country

·         The Climate March sends a strong signal to the world’s leaders to take rapid action on fossil fuels and to step out of coal.

·         -> Message on action on coal, renewables or fossil fuels you want to see in your country

·         Without further action, the world is on track for dangerous global warming. The lives and livelihoods of millions of people are under threat, entire island states are in danger of disappearing from rising sea-levels. Only decisive and rapid action in all countries can deliver a safe climate for all. Tackling climate change means a rapid phase out of fossil fuels, including the burning of coal and sufficient support for poor countries suffering from the impacts of climate change.

·         Globally, a third of oil reserves, half of gas reserves and over 80 per cent of current coal reserves should remain under the ground in order to stay below 2°C. http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v517/n7533/full/nature14016.html?foxtrotcallback=true

·         Coal has no future and is already in decline. All over the world, renewables are rapidly expanding, being cleaner and cheaper than fossil fuels. To date, six countries, states, provinces or cities have completely phased out coal power since 2014, and an additional 17 have announced a coal power phase-out date of 2030 or sooner. http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/press/releases/2017/23-countries-and-states-to-phase-out-coal-as-US432-billion-of-capital-leaves-the-industry/

·         We need clean energy systems in the hands of people and a just transition which ensures no one is left behind. Coal workers and their communities are already in steep decline. They need strong support, now, to build new lives with clean renewable jobs and other economic opportunities.
