Hello and welcome to Ekō News.

Dire straits

China and Japan in escalating spat over Taiwan: What to know - BBC News

China and Japan are longstanding major players in East Asia—and tensions are rising between the two nations.

On Tuesday, China moved to restrict exports to 20 Japanese organizations tied to the country’s military. It also put 20 Japanese companies on a watchlist, bringing the number of entities under Chinese constraint to 40.

The current row began in November, when Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said her country might get involved it China attacked the island nation of Taiwan, which China regards as its territory. Since those comments, Chinese visitors to Japan dropped 61% year-over-year and the two countries are openly hostile to one another.

Japan has moved closer to rearmament in recent years after decades without an offensive military after its defeat in Word War 2.

“You could say it’s a check against the Japan–U.S. relationship and at Japan’s additional defense efforts.”—University of Tokyo Professor Ryo Sahashi

Who’s to blame

There were a record 129 press deaths in 2025 around the world—and two-thirds of them were killings by Israel.

A report from the Committee to Protect Journalists lays out the numbers. Of the 129 deaths, 86 of them were killings by Israel in its wars on Gaza, Lebanon, and the West Bank.

“With much contemporaneous evidence now destroyed, the true number of Palestinian journalists in Gaza who were deliberately targeted by Israel may never be known.”—CPJ report

Fallout continues

The Epstein Files continue to have major ramifications across the world.

In Britain, former Prince Andrew and former cabinet minister Peter Mandelson were each arrested in connection with their sharing information with the pedophile financier. Norway’s former Premier Thorbjørn Jagland was hospitalized after a suicide attempt related to news of his closeness with Epstein.

Plus:

Here’s your campaign of the day

The multi-billion dollar camper van industry is hiding a dirty secret – these vans are being built out of the ashes of precious Indonesian rainforests, destroying the homes of endangered orangutans and Indigenous communities.

A single logging company has clear-cut more than 40,000 hectares in just five years, sold straight into the supply chains of major RV (camper van) manufacturers in the U.S., Australia, and Europe.

It’s all happening because the global RV industry has ZERO sustainability standards. But now we have a chance to stop Borneo’s rainforests from being bulldozed!

Can you help us fight back?
