People living in poverty are facing a double crisis amid the pandemic as they face higher exposure to the virus and lack access to quality health care when they get sick, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in an address marking International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Guterres urged global cooperation to eradicate the virus, asserting that the international community is currently failing the test presented by the pandemic.

United Nations
A United Nations arms embargo against Iran that has been in place for 13 years expired on Sunday as scheduled in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, despite efforts by the US to impose snapback sanctions through the 2015 nuclear deal. Authorities in the US have vowed to impose sanctions on any person or organization supporting Iran's weapons program.

UNICEF has begun efforts to amass a stock of 1 billion syringes to prepare for a coronavirus vaccination campaign once a vaccine is approved. "Vaccinating the world against COVID-19 will be one of the largest mass undertakings in human history, and we will need to move as quickly as the vaccines can be produced," says UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore.

Pandemic-related lockdowns have exacerbated gender inequality in education and could drive an additional 13 million child marriages over the next decade, according to UNESCO's Global Education Monitoring report. The report says girls are less likely than boys to return to school when lockdowns ease, and notes that girls are also less likely to be able to access remote learning programs.

The Sahel region of Africa serves as an early warning of the damage that could be caused by global warming, and the region's deterioration in recent years demonstrates that current steps to limit the effects of climate change are inadequate, says Mark Lowcock, head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. "There is no disagreement about the underlying problems, but there has not been adequate action taken. " Lowcock says.
