around the world must double and distribution
must be more equitable to end the pandemic, says
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres, noting that some developed countries
have purchased more vaccines than needed while
some developing countries have yet to receive
even one dose. Guterres is also pressing
officials at the World Health Organization to

Several countries in the Americas
are nearing 100% occupancy in their hospitals'
intensive care units as coronavirus case counts
continue to surge across the region, says Pan
American Health Organization Director Carissa
Etienne, warning that the spread of the virus is
"far from being controlled in our region." Four

Reports of domestic violence and
gender-based disappearances and deaths have
climbed sharply amid the pandemic, while
movements against policies aimed at ensuring
gender equity have gained ground in many
regions, warns Dubravka Simonovic, United
Nations special rapporteur on violence against
women, as the world marks 10 years since the
initial signing of the Istanbul convention on
gender-based violence. "We have a pandemic of
violence against women that was not addressed
properly in a huge number of states," Simonovic
says. Full Story: The Guardian (London) (free

Alok Sharma, president of this
year's United Nations climate summit, is urging
countries around the world to commit to ending
their reliance on coal power ahead of the event
this November. "...let's make Cop26 the moment
we leave [coal power] in the past where it
belongs, while supporting workers and
communities to make the transition, creating
good green jobs to fill the gap," Sharma says in
a script for an announcement expected
today. Full Story: Climate Home News

Military forces from Eritrea and
Ethiopia continue to work together to block
humanitarian aid access to the majority of
communities in Ethiopia's Tigray region, despite
Ethiopian President Abiy Ahmed's pledge over a
month ago that soldiers were withdrawing from
the region, United Nations officials report. "Of
the three million people targeted to receive
emergency shelter and non-food items, only
347,000 people, that is about 12 per cent, had
been reached since 3 May," says UN spokesperson
Stephane Dujarric. Full Story: CNN
