OLYMPIC CHEMICALS HIT SOCHI'S MZYMTA RIVER AGAIN

Just a few months since Sochi’s largest river Mzymta was hit
with unprecedented pollution dumped by Olympic construction
workers, the situation repeated itself and Sochi residents
witnessed giant clumps of foam form at the mouth of the river on
the Black Sea.
Russian Railways dumped liquid waste into the river in August. A
state monitoring agency later confirmed that this waste contained
extremely high levels of nitrite nitrogen, oil products,
phosphates, and synthetic surfactants. The same sort of massive
foaming was observed on the Mzymta on November 18th, which floated
down the river for several hours and polluted a large area on the
Black Sea shore.
Since August, nobody in Russian Railways or other construction
companies building the massive highway and rail link along the
Mzymta river was punished. A repeat dumping indicates that Russian
Railways blatantly ignores all health and environmental regulation
while state monitoring authorities look the other way.
