The successful development and
distribution of a vaccine will not automatically
reverse the health, social and economic damage
the coronavirus has done, and the global
community must work cooperatively on recovery
efforts, United Nations Secretary-General
Antonio Guterres warned participants at a
special meeting of the UN this week. Guterres
defended the World Health Organization's
response to the crisis but criticized countries
that did not follow the agency's
guidance. Full Story: Macau Business (Macao)/Agence

People with long-term physical,
mental, intellectual or sensory disabilities
face a greater threat from the coronavirus, and
efforts to include them in recovery plans and
society in general are in danger of being
overlooked amid the pandemic, United Nations
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned in an
address marking International Day of Persons
with Disabilities. "Realizing the rights of
persons with disabilities is crucial to
fulfilling the core promise of the 2030 Agenda
-- to leave no one behind," Guterres
added. Full Story: Anadolu Agency (Turkey)

The United Nations has raised
concern about the safety and health of over
500,000 residents of the Tigrayan capital of
Mekele, where critical infrastructure has
reportedly been damaged or destroyed by fighting
between Ethiopia and Tigray rebels, as well as
Eritrean refugees living in Tigray camps, which
remain inaccessible. Over 45,000 Ethiopians --
close to half of whom are children -- have fled
the violence into Sudan, where they are at high
risk of being trafficked, aid agencies
warn. Full Story: The Associated Press
