Members of the United Nations Human Rights Council this week voted in favor of creating a permanent Commission of Inquiry to probe root causes of tension between Israelis and Palestinians and track rights violations in the region on an ongoing basis, despite objections from Israel and the US. Attacks from both sides appear to have targeted civilians and civilian infrastructure in violation of international laws, says UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, who warns both sides could be guilty of war crimes.

United Nations
The International Civil Aviation Organization has announced it will investigate the apparent forced diversion of a passenger plane by authorities in Belarus to determine whether international law was violated. Members of the United Nations Security Council met Wednesday to discuss the incident, with representatives from Western countries condemning the move and calling for an ICAO probe.

Over 20,000 people have lost their homes and 400,000 are in need of aid following a volcanic eruption in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Nations reports, and tens of thousands are fleeing as large cracks appear in roads and buildings and local authorities warn the Mount Nyiragongo volcano could erupt again. The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warns the ash cloud caused by the eruption could drive an increase in respiratory diseases and UNICEF is appealing for international aid, citing the increased risk of cholera outbreaks.

Over half of the world's gross domestic product is dependent on high-functioning biodiversity, and yet the destruction of the natural world has put the ecosystems of around 20% of countries at risk of collapse, a report from the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Economic Forum and the Economics of Land Degradation Initiative warns. The report also notes the global community must quadruple investments in nature to approximately 0.1% of the global GDP to avert crises of climate, biodiversity and land degradation by 2050.

Peacekeeping and Security
Members of the United Nations Security Council this week voted unanimously to extend the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq's mandate for an additional year, with the goal of providing support and advice for inclusive political dialogue and national reconciliation. The council also approved a request from Iraq to deploy a team in the country to monitor national elections in October.
