Position Information

This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Salary Range and Max Salary

The application deadline is: Monday, February 13, 2017.
The salary range for this classification is: $4,693 - $7,617 monthly.


Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Due to the nature of this position, the successful candidate is required to complete a background check prior to assuming this position.

Department: Facilities Services

The Physical Plant Department is responsible for the design, construction, upkeep, repair, and maintenance of State-owned and operated buildings and grounds, totaling in excess of 1,080,498 gross square feet of building space and 346 acres of grounds, 50% in active use.  Its mission is to provide an aesthetically appealing, well-maintained, safe environment, conductive to learning, work, leisure activities, and special events.

Major Duties

Under the general direction of the Central Plant Operations Manager/Energy Manager, the Sustainability Coordinator/Assistant Energy Analyst is responsible for coordinating and maintaining the Universitys leadership role in sustainability in the following arenas: within the campus community, CSU/UC system, within the City of Carson and other surrounding cities, and nationally within higher education.
Incumbent is responsible for working within and across all units and boundaries of the University to develop and foster partnerships between academic programs and University administrations/operations to institutionalize sustainability values and resource conservation. Coordinates the work of others throughout the University to assure program goals and objectives are met. Coordinate the work of student assistants and volunteers for research initiatives and project development and implementation.

The Sustainability Coordinator/Assistant Energy Analyst is responsible for implementing and coordinating sustainability practices and programs among the campus community of students, faculty and staff by planning, analyzing, reporting, communicating, and launching campus wide sustainability programs and initiatives. Sustainability programs include energy efficiency, water conservation projects, recycling projects, and collaborative sustainability projects with students and faculty.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Required Education:  Bachelors degree and/or equivalent training.

Preferred Qualifications:  Bachelor's degree in energy management, environmental science, engineering, sustainability related disciplines, public administration, biological or chemical science.

Required Experience:  Administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

Preferred Experience:  Two years of hands on experience implementing environmental, energy or sustainability programs or 5 years in a related field. Relevant experience in an academic setting, ideally public higher education, CSU/UC or California higher education.

Experience coordinating energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction projects.
Experience working with local or national sustainability and or energy organizations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability issues and concepts at the local, national and global level.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing. Ability to develop and deliver presentations and papers in both informal and formal settings.
- Ability to work with various and diverse constituencies to identify issues, develop working relationships and consensus building in order to recognize common goals, implementing programs, initiatives and procedures/processes that advance the goals and values of sustainability.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and record of success in the area of program development, planning, implementation and project management.
- Demonstrated skills in decision making, judgment, discretion and confidentiality.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to demonstrate capabilities in finding and applying for sustainability grants and funding.
- Ability to coordinate a wide variety of duties, responsibilities and projects with often competing deadlines with ability to take effective action under pressure.
- Strong presentation skills in the preparation and formal/informal presentation of: workshops and papers both graphically and in narrative format.
- Knowledge coordinating energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction projects.
- Knowledge working with local or national sustainability and or energy organizations.
- Ability to maintain and report progress on multiple projects and tasks and adjust to short and often changing deadlines.

Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience researching grant funding and other alternative forms of project funding including project management and document tracking

Certification:  Valid Drivers License

The position activities may require the use of the following: supplies, materials, tools, state-owned vehicles, office equipment (i.e., copiers, facsimile machines, personal computers, and automated telephones) motorized state vehicles, both gas and electric.


Responsibilities

Develop and coordinate plans, programs and initiatives to meet campus sustainability and energy reduction needs (25%)
- Publish campus sustainability reports, greenhouse gas emissions inventories, climate action plans.
- Coordinate with individuals, groups, departments to develop and implement campus sustainability policies and procedures.
- Track energy and sustainability projects over time to prove both cost and energy savings.
- Help to develop and keep organized special energy reduction projects with local utility companies and other grant funded opportunities.

Maintain sustainability communication and outreach programs (25%)
- Develop and maintain the campus Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment, and Reporting System (STARS) database and reports.
- Develop relationships to support the Universitys sustainability programs and initiatives.
- Represent the University at local, regional and national conferences and forums.
- Develop and coordinate campus wide sustainability outreach programs and events such as Earth Day, and other campus sustainability events.
- Design and provide sustainability educational materials for the campus and community.

Coordinates the activities of the Campus Sustainability Committee under the supervision of the Manager, Central Plant/Energy Manager (20%).
- Coordinate and implement sustainability initiatives recommended by the Committee.
- Identify and utilize campus media and communication resources to publicize and promote the activities and accomplishments of the Sustainability Committee.

Coordinate and support sustainability events, activities, class projects, and groups clubs (15%)
- Coordinate internships to provide students with learn/work experience in the planning, development and implementation of sustainability programs.
- Collaborate with academic programs to involve faculty and students in campus wide sustainability projects, initiatives and research projects.
- Connect related academic programs to University based Sustainability programs and operational needs.

Oversee Student Assistants and Interns (15%)
- Participate with interviews and selection of student assistants under the direction of the Manager, Central Plant/Energy Manager.
- Coordinate the day to day activities of student assistants, interns, and volunteers.
